Hsinchu HSR to the city: start by separating three places

Hsinchu’s high-speed rail station is in Zhubei. Central Hsinchu’s conventional railway station is elsewhere, and the Science Park is another destination again. For the old city and hotels around Hsinchu Railway Station, the straightforward public-transport option is the connecting TRA train from Liujia. For a Zhubei address, traveling into Hsinchu first may send you the wrong way.

This 2026 guide covers the local connection after leaving your HSR train. Check your hotel or meeting’s exact address before choosing rail, bus or taxi. An address and building entrance are much more useful than simply asking for “Hsinchu city.”

    Which connection fits your destination?

Destination or need Start with What to allow for
Hsinchu Railway Station / old city Liujia Line to Hsinchu, then walk or take a short local ride About 20 minutes on a local train; NT$24 per adult, plus corridor walking and waiting
Zhubei hotel or office The HSR–Zhubei Railway Station shuttle, or a direct taxi Avoid an unnecessary journey into central Hsinchu
Science Park or university campus Bus 182 toward Beida Bridge serves Tsing Hua University and NYCU’s Guangfu Road stop Verify the specific campus and gate, not just the institution name
Several large bags or a late arrival Designated station taxi rank Compare the whole-car cost and check luggage capacity

The HSR ticket does not open the TRA gates. Buy the local rail journey separately unless your particular package explicitly includes it. A foreign-visitor high-speed rail offer is not automatically a Liujia Line ticket.

Walking from HSR to Liujia station

    1. After leaving the HSR platform, follow signs for TRA Liujia Station.
    2. The HSR information identifies a second-floor connecting corridor. Ask staff about the first-floor Exit 1 approach if you need an alternative.
    3. At Liujia, buy the ticket to Hsinchu or use an eligible stored-value transport card.
    4. Check the destination and next departure on the platform display, then ride to Hsinchu for the city-center connection.

Use the Hsinchu HSR floor and transfer maps rather than an old construction screenshot. Travelers with mobility needs should identify lifts and ask staff about any temporary change. The connection to walk is HSR-to-Liujia, not HSR-to-central-Hsinchu.

Check the timetable before leaving the HSR concourse

Allow about 20 minutes on the Liujia–Hsinchu local train. An ordinary adult one-way ticket costs NT$24. TRA’s local-train base rate is NT$2.18 per kilometre, with a 10-kilometre minimum charging distance. You can use a supported transport card on the ordinary local service; no reserved seat is needed.

The HSR station’s current connecting timetable lists Liujia departures such as 11:02, 11:29 and 12:02 toward Hsinchu. Those examples show why a roughly half-hour wait can matter as much as the ride. They are a daytime example, not a promise of a fixed interval all day.

For the return, select Hsinchu to Liujia in the TRA fare planner. Use the same transport card at both gates and top it up before entering if necessary.

When a station bus makes more sense

Bus 182 toward Beida Bridge serves Hsinchu Railway Station, East Gate Market, Tsing Hua University and NYCU’s Guangfu Road area. Leave the HSR concourse through first-floor Exit 4 for the bus interchange. Tsing Hua’s arrival instructions identify bay 2 for 182; follow any updated station signs. The bus is useful for destinations along Guangfu Road, while Liujia Line is the simpler direct choice for the railway-station district.

The Highway Bureau’s 182 fare table lists one-section pricing: NT$15 adult or NT$8 concession. Do not confuse it with the free-to-eligible-HSR-passengers Zhubei shuttle. The current HSR transfer map lists 22 daily departures from the high-speed station within a 07:15–22:30 window. Check the 182 live route page before committing to the wait.

For a Zhubei hotel or office, the HSR–Zhubei Railway Station shuttle stops at the Sheraton, Dong Yuan Hospital and Hsinchu County Government. HSR estimates about 25 minutes for the complete route. Eligible HSR passengers boarding or leaving at the HSR station can travel free; keep your same-day, same-station HSR ticket for inspection.

The final walk and your return train

At Hsinchu Railway Station, confirm which side of the tracks your hotel occupies before choosing an exit. For a city walk, leave substantial baggage at your accommodation first. A short taxi ride after the train may be a good compromise when the destination is awkward on foot or the weather is poor.

For the return, search Hsinchu to Liujia rather than taking any northbound train. Allow time to leave Liujia, walk into the HSR station and reach the correct platform. If you still need to collect an HSR ticket, add that step as well. Avoid booking a connection that relies on arriving at Liujia just as the high-speed train is departing.

    A few practical questions

Do I reserve a seat on the local train?

No advance reserved seat is needed for an ordinary local service. Check its departure time instead.

    Can I use EasyCard?

Follow TRA’s supported electronic-ticket rules, keep enough balance and use the same card at both ends.

Will the last HSR arrival always connect to TRA?

Do not assume so. Check the final usable Liujia departure and prepare a taxi alternative if necessary.
