Reaching Lalashan from Taoyuan or Daxi requires two separate plans: the bus into the Baling mountain area, and the final approach to the forest’s visitor center and giant-tree trails. Consider bus 5301 from Taoyuan or 5091 from Zhongli via Daxi. If using 5090, note the important change: it now ends at Fuxing, where 5090A continues toward Lalashankou.
For families, older travelers or anyone carrying luggage, an early departure with a prearranged local shuttle, or an overnight stay with agreed accommodation transfers, is often the more workable choice. A bus advertised as serving Lalashan does not necessarily leave you beside the giant trees.
Understand the different arrival points
Baling is the broader North Cross-Island Highway area; Shangbaling is the uphill settlement. Linbankou and Lalashankou are names you will encounter when checking mountain-bus endpoints. A destination described simply as “Lalashan” might mean an accommodation address, farm, forest entrance or visitor center.
The official park guidance describes about 2.8 km of forest road from the entrance toward the visitor center, before the giant-tree trails. If walking, include that approach and the walk back in your available time. It is separate from the forest trail circuit.
When arranging a ride, specify the actual bus stop and ask whether the driver will take you to the ticket entrance or the visitor center. That distinction tells you which walking section the transfer really removes.
Compare the routes before choosing a departure
| Option | Boarding and endpoint | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| 5301 from Taoyuan | Fuxing–Zhongzheng intersection by TRA Taoyuan → Linbankou / Lalashankou | Fewer bus changes |
| 5091 from Zhongli; joining at Daxi | Zhongli rear station or Daxi terminal, toward Lalashan | Travelers already in Zhongli or Daxi |
| 5090 plus 5090A | Taoyuan Bus terminal → Fuxing; change to 5090A → Lalashankou | Travelers who can match both schedules |
| Prearranged transfer or driving | Agree on the accommodation, entrance or visitor-center endpoint | Families, luggage or a longer forest visit |
Taoyuan Airport, Taoyuan HSR and TRA Taoyuan are different places. The city boarding points for these mountain buses are not airport terminals. If arriving by air, first plan the airport-to-Taoyuan-city connection. If approaching through Daxi, use the Taipei-to-Daxi guide, but check the onward mountain bus before committing to the first leg.
Bus 5301 from Taoyuan: use the correct city stop
Chungli Bus operates 5301. Its Taoyuan boarding point is Fuxing–Zhongzheng intersection (Taoyuan railway station), listed in the official stop-address document at 142 Fuxing Road. Follow the stop name and direction rather than assuming every mountain bus leaves from the same operator’s terminal.
Search 5301 in the Taoyuan live bus system and check the departure toward Linbankou or Lalashankou and its current stops. Confirm the destination again when boarding, particularly if road controls have changed the operating endpoint.
Treat this as the main travel component of a mountain day, not a short shuttle to add spontaneously after a long visit to Daxi Old Street. Check the return and decide how you will cover the forest approach before taking the outward bus.
Joining 5091 at Zhongli or Daxi
Bus 5091 starts from the Zhongli rear-station area and travels through Daxi toward Shangbaling and Linbankou. At Daxi, identify the Daxi terminal boarding information for the Lalashan direction. Another bus showing Baling may leave you at a different point, so match the route number and destination together.
Daxi is an intermediate boarding location. A departure time from Zhongli is not the departure time from Daxi; use the stop’s estimated arrival and live vehicle information. The bus may already carry passengers and luggage. Groups or travelers with bulky bags should check practical boarding arrangements rather than assuming empty capacity.
If staying in Daxi, settle the next morning’s mountain connection before arranging breakfast or sightseeing. If changing buses there, include the walk from your first arrival point to the correct mountain-bus stop.
The 5090–5090A change at Fuxing
From 12 January 2026, route 5090 was shortened to the Taoyuan Bus terminal–Fuxing section. NRENTA’s 5090A minibus serves the onward Fuxing–Lalashan section. The Taoyuan government announcement and operator notice establish the change; older descriptions of one 5090 bus through to Linbankou are no longer a sound plan.
Choose a workable 5090A mountain departure first, then a 5090 service that reaches Fuxing in time. Reverse the check for the journey home and confirm the actual interchange stop. A timetable connection is not a guarantee that a vehicle will wait if the first service is late.
The onward vehicle is smaller than a full-size bus. Check space and boarding arrangements with the operator for a group, stroller, wheelchair or substantial luggage. Do not interpret a local resident-card concession as free transport for every visitor.
Arrange the final approach and the ride back
If you do not want to walk the forest-road approach both ways, enquire about a local paid shuttle. The official Lalashan page lists local cooperating fleet contacts at 0989-021005 and 0981-130771. Accommodation providers may also offer transfers, but each arrangement needs confirmation.
Give the passenger count, luggage, exact pickup stop and requested drop-off. Agree on the return time, one-way or round-trip price, and what happens if the public bus is late or the road is controlled. An answer that a shuttle “is available” does not settle those details.
A guesthouse marketed as being in Lalashan is not necessarily an easy suitcase walk from a bus stop. Obtain its address and pickup agreement before choosing where to alight. Confirm whether station pickup and forest transfers are included in the room rate or charged separately.
Day trip or overnight stay?
Calculate usable forest time backward from the downhill bus. Subtract the return walk or shuttle and your expected uphill arrival. If too little time remains, choose a shorter walk or stay overnight rather than rushing a full circuit. Park closing time does not tell you when the last bus leaves.
For a forest-focused day, skip multiple roadside sightseeing stops. Every intermediate stop can cost a scarce onward departure. A private vehicle offers more flexibility; public-bus travelers benefit from making the complete mountain round trip the day’s central commitment.
An overnight stay separates the long uphill journey from the forest walk, but it does not remove the need for local transport. Accommodation is outside the forest recreation area. Agree on the next morning’s outward transfer, return pickup, checkout and luggage storage together.
Budget, vehicle suitability and mountain conditions
Calculate public-bus fares for the actual route, boarding point and ticket category. With 5090 and 5090A, confirm both sections separately. Add any local shuttle and forest admission. The official standard adult park ticket is NT$150; small-car parking is NT$100, a separate charge rather than admission for everyone inside the car.
A one-off mountain visit is not an automatic reason to buy a transport pass. If offered a package, check the named bus sections, shuttle provider, valid dates and admission before comparing it with separate costs.
Driving reduces changes, but the park restricts vehicle types and dimensions. Ask a transfer provider whether the proposed vehicle can enter and whether a change at the gate is necessary. More seats do not automatically mean better access to the visitor center.
Check official road and park notices before departure and follow local controls in rain, fog or rockfall conditions. Carry manageable bags and drinking water, and allow a less demanding schedule for children or travelers prone to motion sickness. Wheelchair users need to assess both vehicle access and the intended forest route; reaching the mountain by road does not make every trail accessible.
Frequently asked questions
1. Does 5090 still run directly to Lalashan?
It now ends at Fuxing, with 5090A continuing onward. Check both services instead of using an old through-bus timetable.
2. Do these buses leave from Taoyuan Airport?
The 5301 and 5090 boarding points described here are in Taoyuan city. Plan the airport connection separately, and avoid forcing a late flight arrival into the same day’s forest visit.
3. Which buses can I investigate from Daxi?
Check 5091 and 5301 toward Linbankou or Lalashankou and confirm the Daxi terminal boarding direction. A 5090-based journey requires the additional change to 5090A at Fuxing.
4. Are Baling and Lalashankou interchangeable stops?
No. Baling, Shangbaling, accommodation addresses and the forest visitor center represent different destinations. Use the exact stop or address when arranging a pickup.
5. Does the public bus leave me beside the giant trees?
Allow for the approach toward the visitor center before the forest trails. The park describes about 2.8 km from the entrance; include the return approach as well or arrange a suitable shuttle.
6. Is 5090A a private car that I must charter?
It is a public minibus route, distinct from a private transfer. Check its current departures and riding rules; contact the operator for special space or accessibility needs.
7. When is the last bus downhill?
Check the exact service you intend to use: 5301, 5091 or 5090A. If changing at Fuxing, also check the onward 5090. Build the forest visit around that complete return.
8. Do all Lalashan guesthouses provide pickups?
Do not assume so. Before booking, ask which stop they collect from, whether forest transfers are available, the times and any charges, including the return.
9. Should I take a large suitcase on a forest day trip?
Leave it with your lowland accommodation if possible. If it must travel with you, establish space on each vehicle and storage at the destination before setting off.
10. Can every private transfer reach the visitor center?
Vehicle restrictions and road controls can affect access. Agree on the exact drop-off and any gate transfer rather than accepting a vague promise of a ride “to Lalashan.”
