Taipei to Daxi: choose the bus connection, not a train named Daxi
Daxi Old Street is in Taoyuan. Taiwan Railways also has a station called Daxi, but that station is in Toucheng, Yilan, on the northeast coast. Booking a train to it is a substantial wrong turn. Use “Daxi Old Street, Taoyuan” when searching maps or discussing the destination.
For this 2026 trip from Taipei, compare the Blue Line to Yongning plus bus 710/710A with high-speed rail to THSR Taoyuan plus the 501 Daxi Express. The best choice depends on the connection, not just the speed of the first train.
Compare the complete journey
| Option | Useful for | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Line + 710 / 710A | Travelers based around Ximen, Banqiao or the Blue Line | Yongning–Daxi Old Street: NT$76 on 710 or NT$75 on 710A; allow about an hour on 710, plus MRT and waiting |
| THSR Taoyuan + 501 | Easy access to HSR or plans around Qingpu / Cihu | HSR fare, the connecting bus and its actual departure |
| Taiwan Railways to Taoyuan + 5096 | Travelers whose starting point suits conventional rail | Separate rail/bus tickets and the station-to-bus walk |
| Taxi or charter | Groups, mobility needs or several dispersed stops | Vehicle total, waiting, stops, luggage and the return |
The Daxi Wood Art Ecomuseum’s transport guide lists public transport approaches, while the Daxi Express page covers route 501. All options still need a final walk or arranged drop-off at the part of the old town you want.
Yongning: use the transfer terminal
- Take the Blue Line toward Dingpu and get off at Yongning BL02.
- Head toward the Exit 2 side and follow the pedestrian signs into Yongning Bus Transfer Station.
- Look for Daxi-bound 710 or 710A. The terminal allocation places them at platform 2; confirm the current signs on arrival.
- Before boarding, confirm the vehicle serves Daxi Old Street or Daxi Station and choose your stop for the intended walking route.
The transport authority’s terminal information and location explanation describe the transfer station west of the MRT Exit 2 area. Do not stop at an old curbside boarding point solely because an older guide names the exit.
The operator’s current 710 page names Neizha and Yongning Bus Transfer Station as the endpoints and provides the route, timetable and fare chart. Route 710A follows a different path. Avoid applying a route’s historic terminal, launch-era frequency or old flat fare to today’s service.
Allow about an hour on 710 from Yongning
Daxi District Office’s transport guide uses about one hour for bus 710 from Yongning to Daxi Old Street. Treat this as an approximate road journey, with longer travel possible during holiday congestion. Compare it with the 501’s 39-minute HSR-station example only after adding your travel to each interchange and its bus wait. From Ximen or Banqiao, 710 avoids an HSR fare; from Qingpu or an existing high-speed-rail itinerary, 501 can be more convenient.
THSR Taoyuan: Exit 5, bus platform 9
At the high-speed rail station, follow Exit 5 to the bus transfer area and platform 9 for the 501 toward Cihu. Alight at Daxi Old Street or Daxi Station as appropriate. THSR Taoyuan, in Qingpu, is not the conventional Taiwan Railways Taoyuan station.
As a planning example, the 501 timetable lists a 09:20 departure from THSR Taoyuan reaching Daxi Old Street at an estimated 09:59, a 39-minute bus leg. It excludes your train from Taipei, the walk between platforms and any waiting. The timetable explicitly treats stop times as estimates; check the applicable day’s departures and live Taoyuan bus information.
Choose a compatible bus first, then a train that leaves a sensible interchange margin. On the return, do not reserve an HSR departure only a few minutes after the bus’s predicted arrival. The bus is still exposed to road traffic.
Tickets and the 501 day-pass decision
The 501 uses distance-based single fares and lists a NT$130 full-fare day ticket, with NT$65 half fare for eligible passengers. Compare the actual sections you plan to ride before choosing it. A day ticket for this bus is not an all-inclusive Taipei–Daxi ticket.
For one old-town visit, compare the two single fares. Additional stops toward Cihu can change the calculation, but HSR, MRT, other buses and admission charges remain separate. The route page lists cash, supported stored-value cards and specified mobile payments. Make sure your chosen payment method is usable in Taiwan and retain a workable backup.
The operator’s current fare matrix lists Yongning Bus Transfer Station to Daxi Old Street at NT$76 adult on 710, or NT$75 on 710A. To Daxi Station the respective fares are NT$77 and NT$76. Use the name of the stop you intend to reach, because even that short extra section changes the price. Follow boarding and alighting card instructions, and keep sufficient balance.
Arriving in the old town
Daxi Old Street is a neighborhood, not one ticket gate. Daxi Old Street stop, Daxi Station and the bridge-side parking area connect to different walking approaches. The museum’s transport and walking guidance helps you choose between the historic streets, museum buildings and riverfront.
The museum’s sites are spread out, and the Li Teng-fang Ancient House is a separate extension rather than an attraction immediately beside every old-town stop. With children or older companions, start with one compact area and leave room for a meal and rest before adding more walking.
There is an elevation difference between the old town and river area. Use open pedestrian routes and suitable lift access where relevant. On arrival, identify your return stop and direction; it may not simply be across the road from where you got off.
Weekend traffic, bags and the trip back
The museum warns of narrow old-town roads and holiday congestion. HSR makes its own rail leg predictable, but it does not remove congestion from the connecting bus. A private vehicle must also follow road restrictions. For a festival or major event, check notices applying to that date rather than relying on a normal-day map.
Leave large suitcases at your accommodation. For a wheelchair or stroller, verify the intended vehicle and walking route in advance; an accessible symbol on some departures does not guarantee every bus is identical. Allow more time if your visit must fit around a flight or another fixed appointment.
If you miss your intended bus, first check whether an alternative transfer point still has a usable onward connection. Consider a licensed taxi when appropriate, but do not improvise a long walk along an unfamiliar road to chase another stop.
A few practical questions
Can I book a train to Daxi station?
The TRA station with that name is in Yilan, not beside Taoyuan’s Daxi Old Street.
Are 710 and 710A identical?
No. Check the route variant and stops rather than only the first three digits.
Is HSR always the fastest option?
Only a complete comparison including the bus wait and transfers can establish that for your departure.
Is my return stop directly opposite the arrival stop?
Not necessarily. Confirm the direction, exact location and any temporary changes.
Plan your Taipei base
Staying near the Blue Line makes Yongning easier to reach; use our Taipei accommodation-area guide to compare bases. The Taipei Metro day-pass options cover its eligible MRT journeys, while 710/710A and 501 require separate payment.
