Chimei Museum’s Christmas Weekend was a special festival, not an ordinary museum visit with a seasonal name. Markets, dancing, concerts, films and gallery activities shared the grounds. The useful first question is whether you want the tree, an evening meal or a particular performance, because those choices lead to different arrival times and ticket needs.
Separate the 2024 programme, the 2025 suspension and a later edition
Christmas Weekend was suspended in 2025 while repairs and equipment upgrades took place. This guide recalls the 2024 edition, not a bookable 2026 programme. Check the actual season’s arrangements before buying tickets; normal museum opening does not mean a Christmas market is running.
The 2024 festival ran on December 14, 15, 21 and 22. Ticketed outdoor access was 09:30–22:00, indoor opening 09:30–21:30, and the main activities and market 14:00–22:00. Arriving in the morning suited a gallery visit, not an assumption that every stall was already trading.
| Interest | 2024 arrangement | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Happiness Christmas Tree | Displayed by mid-November 2024; through January 7, 2025, lit 17:30–22:00 | A longer display than the four festival days |
| Market and main programme | December 14, 15, 21 and 22, 14:00–22:00 | Not a daily December market |
| Outdoor films | Festival-day screenings at 18:00 and 20:00 | Choose a film before fixing dinner and transport |
| Rare-instrument concerts and special exhibition | Separate paid additions | Admission did not include everything |
Different spaces offered different Christmas experiences
The 2024 “Splendid Feast” theme drew on the prosperity depicted in its sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Netherlandish paintings. A classic green Christmas tree, coloured baubles and red-and-gold geometric base complemented the building. Special Christmas Weekend light shows were distinct from the tree’s ordinary daily illumination.
The market’s hot chocolate, cinnamon rolls and international dishes made it a possible dinner stop rather than just somewhere to pass after eating elsewhere. Performance choices required moving between locations: the water garden hosted a DJ party, the art gallery salon concerts and the lobby fencing demonstrations. Outdoor Christmas dancing was another programme, not everything happening continuously beside the tree.
For families preferring a more settled evening, historical film choices included Toy Story 3 at 18:00 and Wonka at 20:00 on December 15, 2024; December 22 offered Sing 2 and Night at the Museum at those times. These were 2024 screenings, not promises for a future edition. The 2024 rules required tents to be packed away by 16:00 and prohibited ground pegs or tying ropes to trees. A simple mat was therefore easier for combining a picnic with a film.
Separate admission, exemptions and optional extras
In 2024, advance admission cost NT$250 plus a NT$10 platform handling fee; on-site admission was NT$300. Even the outdoor grounds followed festival ticketing on the four event days. Children aged 12 or under qualified for free entry with valid identification. Disability-document holders and one companion had to enter together; eligible licensed guides also had an exemption.
The historical special exhibition and rare-instrument concert each required a separate NT$100 payment, while the carousel cost extra. Limited concert places meant that purchasing festival admission did not guarantee a seat. Budget for food and optional activities separately, but do not reuse any 2024 price or eligibility rule for an unannounced 2026 festival.
Walk from Baoan, then plan the late return
The museum is at 66 Wenhua Road, Section 2, Rende District. Allow approximately 15 minutes to walk from Baoan railway station. HSR passengers can transfer at Tainan to the Shalun railway connection and alight at Baoan. H31 and other bus connections are alternatives to compare against the actual day’s timetable.
Leaving after a 20:00 film is different from departing after a short early-evening tree visit. Check the last useful connection before committing to the later programme. Use the Tainan-to-Chimei transport guide and Tainan accommodation guide together. If no seasonal event is announced, the ordinary museum guide remains useful, but a museum booking does not include an unannounced Christmas market.
