For Daxueshan from Fengyuan or Dongshi, start with Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 889. It departs from Platform 2 at Fengyuan Transit Center, travels through the Dongshi area and finishes at Siaosyueshan Travel Information Station. Secure the uphill and downhill seats with Central Taiwan Bus before buying forest tickets or building a hiking itinerary: the mountain section does not allow standing, and same-day reservations are not accepted.

Choose Fengyuan, an intermediate Dongshi stop or a car
For a first car-free visit, boarding 889 at its Fengyuan origin is the clearest plan. If you already stay in Dongshi, ask about an intermediate boarding point instead of automatically returning to Fengyuan. Dongshi is an area, however, and its named bus station should not be assumed to be the same place as an 889 stop.
| Option | Connection | Who it suits and what to check |
|---|---|---|
| 889 from Fengyuan | Fengyuan TRA Station → Transit Center Platform 2 → chosen mountain stop | Car-free travellers with confirmed seats both ways |
| 889 in the Dongshi area | Confirm a stop such as Dongshi Riverside Park with the operator | Useful for local stays; verify the stop, direction and passing time |
| Weekend route 252 | Dongshi → Daxueshan forest area | Official forestry information lists Saturday/Sunday service; check separately rather than treating it as an automatic backup |
| Driving or a confirmed charter | Dongshi → Daxueshan Forest Road → destination | Useful for several stops or bulky bags; check vehicle restrictions, parking and road conditions |
How to reserve route 889
Central Taiwan Bus operates 889. The reservation number is 0800-676-676, extension 2, with calls accepted daily from 08:00 to 17:00. Reservations open two weeks before departure; none are accepted on the travel day. The published limit is two seats per person per departure, with nine reservable seats per service. The mountain section from Dasyueshan Back Entrance to Siaosyueshan Travel Information Station does not allow standing. See the official 889 reservation information for the route rules.
Before calling, write down the date, passenger count, boarding and alighting stops, and the desired return departure and pickup stop. Confirm both directions together before committing to a mountain stay or a long walk. Larger groups should ask the operator how to arrange their journey within the rules rather than creating duplicate bookings. If you cannot use the domestic toll-free number from your phone, ask your accommodation to help contact the operator; do not assume an online ticket has reserved a seat.
Forest admission and a bus reservation are separate. A park ticket does not hold an 889 seat, while an accommodation package may have its own booking instructions and specified departures. If you need to change the return time or boarding stop, ask the operator whether the change is possible before heading into the forest.
Reaching Platform 2 from Fengyuan Railway Station
After arriving by TRA train, follow the local signs to Fengyuan Transit Center and find Platform 2 for 889. The departure city and the operating company are different things: this is Central Taiwan Bus, even though it starts in Fengyuan. Save your reservation details, stop names and the contact number before travelling, and ask station staff if you are unsure which waiting area to use.
From central Taichung, travel by TRA to Fengyuan and allow time to walk to the transit center. From Taichung HSR, include the transfer to TRA at Xinwuri and the Fengyuan-end walk in your plan. A train arriving shortly before the scheduled bus is not a comfortable connection for a first visit. With luggage, choose an earlier arrival; limited seats mean the following bus cannot be assumed to solve a missed connection.
Boarding in Dongshi: use the exact stop name
The official 889 stop list includes Dongshi Riverside Park and Dasyueshan Back Entrance. The outbound and inbound lists are not identical, so verify the correct direction as well as the stop. Tell the reservation staff where you intend to board, then check the official 889 live bus information for that stop rather than searching only for “Dongshi bus station.”
Dasyueshan Back Entrance is an early stop on the mountain-bound route, not an indication that you have reached the high-elevation forest recreation area. Travellers heading to the visitor center or Siaosyueshan should remain on board until their agreed destination. Intermediate arrival times are estimates: wait at the correct sign in advance instead of staying in a nearby shop until the phone display says the bus is close.
Timetable and travel time: morning departures work better for a day trip
The official Taiwan Tourist Shuttle timetable currently lists the following origin departures. All times are local to Taiwan. Confirm the service for your date when reserving, and remember that traffic affects intermediate times and actual arrival.
| Direction | Morning departures | Afternoon departures |
|---|---|---|
| Fengyuan Transit Center → Siaosyueshan | 07:15, 07:30 | 13:30, 13:45 |
| Siaosyueshan → Fengyuan Transit Center | 10:15, 10:30 | 16:30, 16:45 |
The 07:15 Fengyuan departure is scheduled to reach Siaosyueshan at 09:33, a journey of about 2 hours 18 minutes; the 07:30 departure is listed with a 09:58 arrival. The 16:30 downhill service is listed as reaching Fengyuan at 19:04. These are timetable estimates, not guaranteed connections. Consult the official stop-by-stop timetable and fares and leave a separate buffer before onward TRA or HSR trains.
For a day trip, a confirmed morning uphill seat and afternoon return usually give a more useful visit. An afternoon bus leaves a much shorter window before the downhill departures and is better suited to an overnight stay or a deliberately short plan. If boarding downhill at the visitor center, use that stop’s passing time and your reservation details, not the origin time at Siaosyueshan.
Bus fares, admission and passes are separate decisions
The official fare table lists the full adult journey from Fengyuan Transit Center to Siaosyueshan at NT$163 in cash or NT$158 with a standard electronic transport card. For a shorter trip or Dongshi boarding, check your exact stop pair. Concessions and promotions can have different eligibility or card conditions, so budget using a fare you know applies to you.
The fare does not include forest admission. For one return trip, compare individual transport and entrance costs before buying a package or pass. Check what is included and whether it helps with seat reservations; a product name alone does not answer either question. Travellers eligible for a reduced entrance ticket should check the official Daxueshan admission information and required proof before purchasing a full-price ticket.
Once transport is confirmed, an electronic entrance ticket can simplify the admission step. The linked product is for forest entry, not an 889 seat. Check the ticket category, validity and redemption instructions, and save the voucher before travelling rather than relying on a mountain mobile connection.
Choose your mountain stop before reserving
The Toll Station (35 km), Visitor Center and Siaosyueshan Travel Information Station are different stops. Being inside the same recreation area does not make them interchangeable or a short walk apart. Overnight visitors should use the stop specified by their accommodation. Walkers should choose their trail, its actual entrance and a feasible return pickup before deciding where to get off.
Use the official 889 route map together with the official Daxueshan visitor brochure to connect the bus stop, walking route and return stop. A named hiking trailhead on the bus route does not guarantee an easy stroll. Nor should you expect frequent hop-on, hop-off transport between mountain stops. Any additional bus leg needs its own workable timetable and seating arrangements.
Can weekend bus 252 be your backup?
The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency also lists route 252 from Dongshi to Daxueshan, operating on Saturdays and Sundays. It is a separate route and should be checked separately for the date, boarding point, return service and reservation requirements. An 889 reservation or timetable does not apply to it.
If you cannot secure a usable journey in both directions, change the date or obtain a confirmed alternative transport plan before committing to admission and accommodation. Reaching Dongshi and searching for an uphill ride on the day can leave the return unresolved. For a different car-free outing, the Taichung transportation guide can help you choose a less complicated day rather than forcing every mountain destination into the same itinerary.
Luggage, children, accessibility and mountain weather
Ask about luggage when reserving if you will bring overnight bags, a stroller or bulky birdwatching equipment. A booked seat does not automatically reserve storage space. Families should confirm the children’s seating arrangements; wheelchair users should ask about the exact vehicle, boarding method and stop environment before making other bookings. “Tourist shuttle” is not a guarantee of accessible boarding.
Conditions in the mountains can differ sharply from downtown Taichung. Carry a warm layer, rain protection and drinking water, and save booking details, maps and tickets for offline use. Check road and park notices again before leaving. An existing reservation does not guarantee operation, and disruption messages may not reach you before you begin travelling.
Drivers and charter passengers must also consider forest-road vehicle restrictions and conditions. Do not assume a large city tour coach can enter. Confirm the destination, luggage, planned stops and return waiting arrangements with an appropriate provider. If arriving in Taichung late, an overnight city stay and a next-morning bus is often easier to organise; compare Taichung accommodation areas and HSR-to-city connections for the preceding evening.
Fengyuan and Dongshi to Daxueshan FAQs
1. Does 889 start in Dongshi?
No. It starts at Fengyuan Transit Center, Platform 2, and serves the Dongshi area on the way. Ask the operator about the exact intermediate boarding stop if staying there.
2. Is Fengyuan Bus the 889 operator?
No. Contact Central Taiwan Bus on 0800-676-676, extension 2. Do not confuse the departure city with the operating company.
3. Can I make a reservation on the travel day?
The official rules do not allow same-day reservations. The mountain section has no standing, so confirm seats in advance rather than assuming you can board on arrival.
4. When do bookings open and how many seats can I reserve?
Reservations open two weeks ahead, with a limit of two seats per person per departure and nine reservable seats per service. Ask the operator how a larger group can travel within those rules.
5. Can I leave the return booking until I reach the mountain?
That is a poor plan because the return also has limited seats and departures. Confirm it before arranging the walk or overnight stay; ask about any later change.
6. Is Dasyueshan Back Entrance the high-mountain park entrance?
Do not treat it that way. The route continues to separate toll-station, visitor-center and Siaosyueshan stops. Choose the stop for your actual destination.
7. Is Dongshi bus station the same as an 889 stop?
Not necessarily. Check the named 889 stop, such as Dongshi Riverside Park, along with the direction and your confirmed boarding point.
8. Is an afternoon uphill bus good for a day trip?
It leaves a shorter visit before the downhill services. A morning arrival suits a relaxed walk better; afternoon departures are more useful for an overnight stay or a clearly defined short visit.
9. Does NT$163 include the park entrance?
No. That is the published full-route adult cash bus fare. Admission, accommodation and activities are separate expenses.
10. Does a Klook entrance ticket reserve my bus seat?
No. The linked product is forest admission. Reserve transport separately through Central Taiwan Bus’s process.
11. Does route 252 run every day?
Official forestry information lists Saturday and Sunday operation. Check the date, boarding point and return before relying on it, especially as an alternative to 889.
12. What if heavy rain or a typhoon affects my booked trip?
Check the operator and park notices and contact them for the current situation. Roads, buses and trails can change independently; a reservation is not proof that the trip will run.
