Hualien to Qixingtan: use route 308, but plan the return first

For an independent beach visit in 2026, start with Ubus route 308 between Hualien Bus Station and Qixingtan. Depending on where you stay, an intermediate city stop may be more convenient than going back to the railway station.

The useful question is not just how to reach the coast. Decide how you will get back after your walk, especially if you have a train to catch or want to stay into the evening. A short distance on a map does not remove the wait for the next bus.

Choice How to compare it Best suited to
308 bus Adult NT$49 from Hualien Bus Station or NT$39 from Dongdamen Night Market A flexible daytime visit near the route
Taxi or booked transfer Meter or agreed quote for your exact endpoints Groups, luggage and a fixed return time
Bicycle The full return distance, weather and your stamina Confident riders with an appropriate route

    Where to board in Hualien

If arriving by rail, follow signs to Hualien Bus Station and check its departure displays. Do not assume the first roadside stop outside the railway station is the correct boarding point. Ask for 七星潭, Qixingtan, if you need help.

The route also serves city stops, including Dongdamen Night Market and Hualien Distillery. Some central streets use different paths in each direction. Open the county’s 308 stop map and arrivals and select the Qixingtan-bound direction before navigating to a stop.

Check the main route, not just the number 308A

The operator’s current diagram distinguishes 308 to Qixingtan from 308A to Minyi Community. An early 308A departure is not a sunrise bus to the beach. Read the destination line above any timetable before using it.

The main 308 schedule currently lists departures from Hualien Bus Station at 07:30, 09:20, 10:20, 11:30, 13:30, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00. From Qixingtan it lists 08:30, 10:20, 11:20, 12:20, 14:30, 16:00, 17:00 and 18:30. Check for date-specific changes before travelling; intermediate stops need live arrival information.

    Budget for the complete journey

The Highway Bureau’s adult fare matrix for 308 lists NT$49 from Hualien Bus Station to Qixingtan, NT$39 from Dongdamen Night Market and NT$25 from Hualien Distillery. These are specified adult-fare journeys; NT$25 should not be read as a flat full-route fare.

If staying by Dongdamen, boarding there avoids returning to the station and paying for the extra loop. Route 308 serves city and Meilun stops before reaching the coast, rather than taking a taxi’s direct route. Missing the 11:30 bus-station departure also leaves a two-hour gap until 13:30.

For a road-time comparison, Hiyes Hotel on Guolian 5th Road, near the railway station, quotes approximately 15 minutes by car to Qixingtan. That is an estimate from that particular hotel, not the bus running time. A taxi or transfer quote should cover your own pickup address and intended return.

Why old guides show 105 or 1133A

Older tourism information can preserve route numbers that are not useful for today’s journey. Use the current county and operator pages to choose a service, rather than arriving at a stop with only a screenshot from an old blog. Confirm the destination even when the number looks familiar.

Do not assume a Qixingtan bus proves access throughout Taroko Gorge. If combining the coast with the national park, read the park’s post-earthquake bus information and current access notices separately. Transport to a visitor centre, road access and individual trail openings are different questions.

Beach access and a workable pickup point

Find the return stop as soon as you arrive, then save its location. For a taxi pickup, choose a named road-accessible meeting place and agree it with the driver. A pin on the shoreline can be useless if the car cannot reach it.

Leave bulky luggage at your accommodation if possible. A coastal walk becomes less enjoyable when you are dragging a suitcase and watching a train deadline. Follow local warning signs and stay clear of breaking waves, particularly in rough weather.

If you want to cycle or stay late

Cycling should be a deliberate activity rather than a last-minute substitute for a missed bus. Plan the complete return, daylight and an alternative if wind or rain makes the ride uncomfortable. A one-way distance can underestimate the effort of getting back.

For an evening visit, arrange transport before leaving town if your plans extend beyond the bus timetable. Keep your driver’s contact details and the meeting instructions available offline. Do not build a rail connection around finding an unbooked vehicle immediately.

    A few practical questions

Does 308A go all the way to Qixingtan?

The operator identifies 308A as the branch to Minyi Community, not the main Qixingtan service.

Can I use the very early branch bus for sunrise?

Do not assume so. The main route currently starts from Hualien Bus Station at 07:30.

When is the last listed return?

The present main-route table lists 18:30 from Qixingtan. Recheck operating notices and arrive early.

Does reaching Qixingtan mean Taroko Gorge is fully accessible?

No. Check national-park road, bus and trail notices separately.
