Kaohsiung to Fo Guang Shan: E02 bus timetable, fares and return planning 2026
For a straightforward independent visit to Fo Guang Shan from Kaohsiung in 2026, one convenient option is the E02 Hofa Express (哈佛快線) from Zuoying HSR Station. The bus serves both Fo Guang Shan Monastery and Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, but these are separate stops. Choosing the right stop, checking the weekday or holiday timetable and planning your return are the most important parts of the journey.
The Buddha Museum is the complex associated with the giant seated Buddha and pagodas. If that is your main destination, look for 佛陀紀念館 (Buddha Museum). If you are visiting the monastery, look for 佛光山 (Fo Guang Shan). Do not assume the two stops are interchangeable, particularly when planning your return.
Important: The published E02 timetable took effect on 15 June 2026. The final scheduled return departure is 18:30 from Fo Guang Shan Monastery, continuing to the Buddha Museum stop at 18:33 and reaching Zuoying at 19:04. However, E02 does not serve the Buddha Museum stop on Tuesdays because the museum is closed. Check the official E02 timetable and operator’s current route information again before travelling.
Think of this as an out-of-town excursion rather than a quick city transfer. A bus departure time is not a museum closing time, and the scheduled arrival at Zuoying is not the time you will reach your hotel or train platform. If you have an onward train, work backward from a suitable return bus and allow for walking, waiting and traffic delays.
| Option | What it involves | Good fit |
|---|---|---|
| E02 from Zuoying | A scheduled bus after your rail or MRT connection, with separate stops for the Buddha Museum and monastery | An independent visit focused on Fo Guang Shan |
| Dashu Blessing Line A | From Fengshan railway station via the Jiuqutang area to Fo Guang Shan / Buddha Museum | Travellers staying near Fengshan or Jiuqutang |
| Taxi or private vehicle | A specified entrance and agreed return pickup | Groups, bulky luggage or a multi-stop day |
Where to board E02 at Zuoying HSR Station
The E02 Hofa Express departs from bus bay 3 at the Zuoying HSR bus-transfer area. After leaving the high-speed rail station, follow the bus-transfer signs, find stop 3 and confirm that the bus is marked E02 / 哈佛快線 before boarding.
If you are starting in central Kaohsiung, take the Kaohsiung MRT Red Line toward Zuoying and follow the station signs to the HSR bus-transfer area. Allow time to leave the MRT station and find the correct bus stop rather than treating your MRT arrival and bus departure as a direct platform connection.
If arriving by conventional Taiwan Railway, use Xinzuoying Station for the HSR interchange. Xinzuoying is not the separate railway station named Zuoying.
The Kaohsiung Bus E02 route page includes the route map, timetable, fare lookup and bus arrival information. It is useful to open before leaving your hotel, especially if you may have limited mobile data during the journey.
E02 is a scheduled service, not a turn-up-and-go shuttle with a guaranteed short waiting time. Departures are unevenly spaced, so check the actual time rather than assuming a bus arrives every 30 or 40 minutes.
E02 bus timetable: Zuoying to Fo Guang Shan and return
The following departure times come from the operator’s timetable effective 15 June 2026 (ROC 115.06.15). Times use the 24-hour clock. Weekday and holiday schedules differ, especially for return journeys.
How to read the return times: In the two return rows below, each time is the scheduled departure from the Fo Guang Shan Monastery stop. If you are boarding at the Buddha Museum, use its separate column in the full operator timetable. In the published schedule, the Buddha Museum is normally listed three minutes after the monastery departure. The museum stop is not served on Tuesdays.

Before leaving, check the full E02 timetable for later revisions and the live arrival information for delays or temporary changes. The timetable above is a planning reference, not a live countdown.
Outbound example: Zuoying HSR to Buddha Museum or monastery
On the published weekday schedule, a 10:00 departure from Zuoying HSR is due at the Buddha Museum at 10:31 and at Fo Guang Shan Monastery at 10:37. The next weekday departure from Zuoying is 10:40. On holidays, departures around the same period include 10:00 and 10:30.
The scheduled journey is approximately 31 minutes to the Buddha Museum and 37 minutes to the monastery in this example. Actual travel may take longer. On Tuesdays, the bus does not stop at the Buddha Museum even though the monastery service may still operate.
Return example: Buddha Museum or monastery to Zuoying HSR
On a weekday, a bus departing Fo Guang Shan Monastery at 15:00 is scheduled to reach the Buddha Museum stop at 15:03 and Zuoying HSR at 15:34. The next weekday monastery departure at 16:10 is scheduled at the Buddha Museum at 16:13 and Zuoying at 16:44.
The last listed return on both weekday and holiday timetables is 18:30 from Fo Guang Shan Monastery, 18:33 from the Buddha Museum stop and 19:04 arrival at Zuoying HSR. The 18:33 museum stop does not operate on Tuesdays under the normal closure restriction.
These are scheduled bus-stop times, not guaranteed arrivals or permission to remain inside the museum until that hour. Check the venue’s opening arrangements separately, identify the correct return stop and leave enough time to reach it before the bus is due.
If you have an onward HSR departure, include the journey from the bus bay to the train platform and a reasonable delay buffer. Avoid making the last bus your only workable connection.
E02 Hofa Express vs the Fo Guang Shan internal shuttle
Two different services are sometimes described as a Fo Guang Shan shuttle bus. E02 Hofa Express is the public bus connecting Zuoying HSR with the Buddha Museum and monastery. The Fo Guang Shan internal shuttle operates between the monastery’s Non-duality Gate (不二門) and the Buddha Museum. They have different boarding points and schedules.
The Buddha Museum’s official transport and shuttle information lists the following arrangements for the internal service:
- Monday to Friday: An hourly service is listed. Non-duality Gate to the Buddha Museum departs on the hour, beginning at 09:00 and listed through 17:00. In the opposite direction, the museum-to-gate service is listed at 15 minutes past the hour, beginning at 09:15 and listed through 17:15.
- Weekends and holidays: The museum describes a service approximately every 30 minutes. Check the posted timetable at the shuttle stop for actual departures, especially the last service, as the published general service window and individual weekend last-departure details are not fully consistent.
- Tuesdays: The Buddha Museum is normally closed. Do not assume the internal shuttle operates on its usual weekday schedule during the closure.
Ask staff about the internal shuttle’s current boarding and fare arrangements rather than assuming it is free. Free museum admission does not cover the E02 public bus fare.
If you intend to visit both the monastery and the Buddha Museum, check the internal shuttle arrangements and your E02 return stop before starting. Do not assume that walking between the two locations will be quick, comfortable or step-free for every traveller.
Paying for E02: electronic cards, QR payments and cash fares
E02 is not a free public shuttle. Kaohsiung Bus operates a distance-based fare system on this route. Under the operator’s current policy, passengers using supported electronic tickets or mobile payments have a maximum self-paid fare of NT$60 per journey. This is not a universal fixed cash fare, and it is not the price of a round-trip ticket.
Supported electronic tickets include iPASS (一卡通), EasyCard (悠遊卡) and icash 2.0. The operator also lists eligible boarding QR codes through iPASS Money, EasyWallet / 悠遊付 and iCash Pay, using the designated scanning equipment.
Tap or scan both when boarding and when alighting. Keep sufficient stored value or ensure your supported payment method is ready before boarding. Do not assume every stop provides a place to top up.
For cash payments, use the operator’s fare lookup for your actual boarding and alighting stops, and confirm the applicable fare before travel. Older timetable material includes different full and concessionary fare figures; these should not replace the operator’s current distance-based fare and electronic-payment policy.
The Kaohsiung transport authority’s electronic-payment guidance also identifies E02 as eligible for the relevant single-journey payment cap. Confirm eligibility rather than assuming that an unrelated city-bus discount, tourist pass or fare offer automatically applies.
Two outdated assumptions to avoid
Tuesday does not work like an ordinary museum day. The bus operator explicitly states that E02 skips the Buddha Museum stop on Tuesdays because the museum is closed. This does not mean every Fo Guang Shan Monastery service is suspended. Check the correct stop and the museum’s visitor information before choosing your date, particularly around holidays or special opening arrangements.
Do not plan around the former 8501 extension. The museum’s transport information has identified that extension as discontinued. Do not build your journey around an old direct connection from E-Da World. Other services in the wider Dashu district may use different stops, so verify their routes and destinations separately rather than assuming they reach the entrance you need.
If staying near Fengshan or Jiuqutang, compare Dashu Blessing Line A. The museum lists it from Fengshan railway station through the Dashu area to Fo Guang Shan and the Buddha Museum, with a connection from Jiuqutang. This may avoid travelling across Kaohsiung to Zuoying, but check the relevant operator’s current schedule and stops before relying on the service.
How long does E02 take, and how much connection time should you leave?
The operator’s published E02 timetable gives approximately 31 minutes from Zuoying HSR to the Buddha Museum and 37 minutes to Fo Guang Shan Monastery on the example services above. The route description also refers to a journey of approximately 35 minutes. None of these figures guarantees an arrival time.
There is an important operating condition on this route: standing passengers are not permitted on the freeway. If passengers are standing before the bus joins the freeway, the operator says the service will divert to local roads instead. This can add approximately 10–20 minutes, depending on traffic, and the diverted service will not serve the Lingkou (Qijia Highway) and Desheng Lane stops.
Allow for the possibility of this diversion even if your intended destination is the museum or monastery. The scheduled bus journey does not include waiting at Zuoying, finding the bus bay, walking within the destination or reaching your hotel afterward.
Choose a return that leaves room for another usable departure if you miss it. If even one missed bus would break your onward HSR connection, leave earlier or arrange a confirmed private pickup. Do not depend on a taxi appearing immediately when you need one.
Luggage, accessibility and private pickups
If changing hotels on the same day, arrange bag storage or book a vehicle with confirmed luggage capacity. Bringing large suitcases through an excursion creates additional work at transfers and inside the destination. If using a private vehicle, tell the driver both your group size and luggage dimensions; seating capacity alone does not guarantee sufficient storage space.
Passengers who need wheelchair-accessible bus arrangements should contact Kaohsiung Bus in advance at 07-7426644. The operator specifically provides this number for accessibility reservations. Explain your intended date, direction and boarding stop so the service can be discussed before you travel.
Also confirm suitable access arrangements with the site itself. Although the Buddha Museum describes accessible visitor facilities, a bus connection does not establish a completely step-free route between every attraction, bus stop and monastery area. If considering the internal shuttle, confirm whether it meets your mobility requirements.
For a private pickup, agree on the exact entrance or meeting point, collection time, waiting allowance and overtime terms in writing. Be especially clear whether pickup is at the Buddha Museum or Fo Guang Shan Monastery.
Returning to central Kaohsiung after Fo Guang Shan
Find your E02 return stop when you arrive, while there is no rush. Save the correct direction and departure time, then work out when you need to leave the exhibits or monastery grounds. For travellers who walk slowly or require accessible routes, base the plan on the time needed to reach the boarding point rather than the time you finish sightseeing.
At Fo Guang Shan Monastery, the operator’s timetable identifies the return boarding location near Manxiangyuan, at the Kaohsiung Bus stop sign. The outbound terminal location and the return boarding position should not be assumed to be identical. At the Buddha Museum, confirm the E02 return stop separately.
Once E02 arrives back at Zuoying HSR, you may still need an MRT journey to central Kaohsiung, a transfer to Taiwan Railway at Xinzuoying or time to reach the HSR platforms. For the next stage of your journey, see our Zuoying HSR to Kaohsiung city transport guide.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
1. Where can I find the latest E02 weekday and holiday timetable, including return buses?
Use the official E02 timetable, effective 15 June 2026, and recheck the operator’s route page for later changes. The tables distinguish weekday and holiday services. For return journeys, read the Fo Guang Shan column if boarding at the monastery, or the Buddha Museum column if boarding at the museum. They show different departure times.
2. Where do I board E02 at Zuoying, and how do I get there from central Kaohsiung?
Board E02 at bus bay 3 in the Zuoying HSR bus-transfer area. From central Kaohsiung, take the MRT Red Line to Zuoying and follow signs toward HSR bus transfers. If arriving by conventional rail, use Xinzuoying Station. Allow time to locate the bus bay and confirm the E02 destination before joining the queue.
3. Is the E02 shuttle free, and can I pay with EasyCard or cash?
E02 is not free. Supported iPASS, EasyCard, icash 2.0 and specified mobile QR payments qualify for a maximum self-paid fare of NT$60 per journey under the operator’s current policy. You must tap or scan when boarding and alighting. Cash fares are calculated separately according to the journey, so check the operator’s current fare lookup rather than treating NT$60 as a universal ticket price.
4. Does E02 stop at the Buddha Museum on Tuesdays?
No. Kaohsiung Bus states that E02 does not serve the Buddha Museum stop on Tuesdays because the museum is normally closed. The Fo Guang Shan Monastery stop is a separate destination and should not be confused with the closed museum stop. Check for special opening arrangements before travelling, and do not assume the internal museum shuttle follows its usual weekday timetable on Tuesdays.
5. What is the last E02 bus back to Zuoying?
The published weekday and holiday timetables both list a final departure at 18:30 from Fo Guang Shan Monastery, followed by 18:33 at the Buddha Museum stop and scheduled arrival at Zuoying HSR at 19:04. The Tuesday museum-stop restriction still applies. Check the travel-day service and leave extra time if you have an HSR train, as delays and station transfers can affect your connection.
6. Should I get off at Fo Guang Shan or the Buddha Museum, and can I use either return stop?
Choose 佛陀紀念館 for the Buddha Museum, giant seated Buddha and pagodas, or 佛光山 for the monastery. These are distinct E02 stops. On the return journey, the bus is scheduled to leave the monastery before reaching the museum stop. Identify the correct boarding point in advance; do not assume you can move quickly or accessibly between them to catch a departing bus.
7. Can wheelchair users take E02, and is the journey always around 35 minutes?
For wheelchair-accessible arrangements, contact Kaohsiung Bus at 07-7426644 before travelling and confirm access at your destination. The approximately 35-minute journey is not guaranteed: standing passengers before the freeway can trigger a local-road diversion adding roughly 10–20 minutes. Allow additional time for station transfers, mobility needs, luggage and weather, and avoid tight onward train connections.
8. Is the shuttle between Fo Guang Shan Monastery and Buddha Museum the same as E02?
No. E02 is the public bus between Zuoying HSR and Fo Guang Shan. The internal shuttle links the monastery’s Non-duality Gate with the Buddha Museum. The museum’s shuttle information describes hourly weekday departures, generally on the hour toward the museum and at quarter past toward the gate, with a roughly 30-minute weekend and holiday frequency. Check the stop notice for exact departures, last services and Tuesday arrangements.
If arriving from Taipei the day before, compare Taipei-to-Kaohsiung transport and choose a base with convenient access to Zuoying or Fengshan in our Kaohsiung accommodation guide.
