If you want to use scuba equipment for the first time in Xiaoliuqiu, choose an instructor-led introductory experience. Start with health screening and your onward itinerary, then compare instruction and photography. “No certification required” means you may try the activity under appropriate professional supervision; it does not mean no training, no risk or permission to dive independently afterward. This guide is for uncertified beginners and covers one-to-one packages, harbor-to-shop logistics, reasons to postpone and why a flight cannot simply be scheduled around the advertised activity finish time.

Who is an introductory dive for?
An introductory dive can help you discover whether you enjoy scuba if you are curious about breathing underwater and willing to spend time learning, practising and following the instructor. If turtles are your only goal and putting your head underwater feels uncomfortable, consider whether snorkeling or staying on shore suits you better. Companions do not need identical activities. A photograph, celebration or prepaid booking is never a reason to continue when you are uncomfortable.
Introductory diving, certified-diver excursions and certification courses are different products. Certified excursions require an appropriate qualification; certification requires completion of training and skills. PADI explicitly states that Discover Scuba Diving is an experience, not a certification. Read the complete product name instead of choosing the cheapest result for “Xiaoliuqiu diving.” If you may later take a course, ask which training system the session follows, what record you receive and whether any credit applies. Do not assume every try-dive offers course credit.
Resolve medical screening before travelling
Ask the dive shop for its applicable medical questionnaire before arranging the trip, and answer honestly about your history, current symptoms and medication. The 2026 Diver Medical Participant Questionnaire available through PADI directs some respondents to a physician evaluation. Signing it is not the same as medical clearance. Follow the complete questionnaire and shop requirements. If there is uncertainty, consult a physician familiar with diving medicine; do not stop medication, hide symptoms or use an online article to clear yourself.
If you have a cold, congestion, ear discomfort or otherwise feel unwell, tell the instructor and assess postponement. Do not scuba dive while pregnant or trying to become pregnant; clarify any possible pregnancy before participating and seek medical advice and choose another activity. Operators may apply acceptance policies stricter than a general training programme. Bear Diving’s own page lists restrictions involving particular conditions and long-term medication. Clearance for ordinary exercise does not automatically meet a specific diving product’s policy, so resolve both medical and operator requirements before paying.
Age requirements are product-specific. PADI Discover Scuba Diving generally starts at ten, but that does not mean every Xiaoliuqiu operator accepts ten-year-olds on every session. Bear Diving’s direct introductory page lists ages 10–50 and parental consent below 18; check the selected package on other sales channels. The instructor must also consider understanding, equipment fit and willingness. A snorkeling product’s child policy cannot be carried over to scuba.
Comparing one-to-one instruction and photography
The value of one-to-one instruction is a clear supervision arrangement while you adjust to equipment and the underwater environment. Ask which stage the ratio covers: the actual underwater instructor-to-student ratio, whether land briefings are shared and who handles photography. Two friends booking together may not be in the same frame or follow exactly the same pace. If you do not understand Mandarin, confirm that the safety briefing and communication arrangements can be delivered in a language you understand.
Compare the practice stage, whether extra shallow-water adaptation can be accommodated, how to stop if frightened and the charging policy for early withdrawal. Useful pre-trip communication establishes when a session may pause rather than extracting a promise that everyone will complete it. “No certification required” and high ratings do not replace these checks. Compare image counts, video lengths and gifts only after language, health acceptance and transport are clear.
Bear Diving: choosing the one-to-one experience
Klook product 43507 is Bear Diving’s one-to-one introductory scuba experience in Xiaoliuqiu. The public overview lists Chinese/English, a private-group format, meeting at a designated location and original underwater photographs and videos. Options include an individual scuba experience and a snorkeling-plus-scuba combination. Check which you select. Gifts, winter promotions and headline prices may vary by date and package, so they should not be treated as year-round inclusions or a fixed cost for every guest.
The Klook overview lists one hour, while the operator’s direct page lists two hours. Neither should be converted into a promise of one hour underwater. Registration, medical checks, changing, instruction, shore transfers and showers take time. Ask the shop how long to reserve for your booking and how the underwater part is arranged. Avoid connecting a ferry or restaurant reservation to a single headline duration. Keeping the half-day flexible is more sensible than treating the experience as a quick photo stop.
The direct operator page lists instruction, personal scuba equipment, photography, insurance and showers; ferry tickets and transport appear among separate add-ons. That helps frame your comparison but does not transfer direct-booking conditions to a Klook order. Check towels, prescription masks, personal mouthpieces, harbor transfers and accommodation separately, as well as insurance coverage. Even with “full equipment,” ask about sizes and fitting. Proper fit matters more than a complimentary item.
Two address numbers: confirm the meeting pin
PADI’s Bear Diving directory lists No. 87, Xiangpu Road. The same operator’s direct introductory-scuba page instead lists No. 88-8 in the meeting information while retaining No. 87 in its footer. Resolve that difference before leaving rather than choosing one number for every activity. Give the shop your order number, date and “introductory scuba” activity type, and request the check-in pin. A name search or snorkeling meeting address alone is insufficient.
From Kaohsiung, travel to Donggang or the Yanpu terminal specified by your ticket, then take the ferry to Xiaoliuqiu. Plan the arrival harbor and the dive-shop meeting point as separate legs, particularly with luggage, no scooter or transfer requirements. The operator describes travelling to the sea after changing; do not assume the shop is at the ferry landing or every transfer is included. Shore access also involves equipment and entry/exit demands. Discuss mobility or balance difficulties before booking.
Allow time for check-in and delays between ferries and the session. An early appointment is easier to manage after a night on the island. If travelling from another city that day, choose a session that fits real transport rather than sacrificing sleep for the first slot. Start with the Kaohsiung–Donggang transport guide, then compare Xiaoliuqiu accommodation areas against the confirmed meeting location.
The session: practise before progressing
An introduction generally begins with registration, a medical review and equipment fitting, followed by instruction on equipment, safety and communication signals, then appropriate water practice. Bear Diving’s published process also places shore-area practice before the experience. The aim is understanding and readiness, not completing steps as quickly as possible. You should know how to communicate discomfort, and the instructor decides whether to progress. Ask for another explanation if needed rather than copying a companion without understanding.
Breathing and equalization must be taught by your instructor; this article does not provide do-it-yourself descent or decompression procedures. Do not hold your breath while using scuba. Signal the instructor if you have ear pain, cannot equalize comfortably, feel breathless or become frightened, and stop descending with their assistance. Do not force a depth target or make an uncontrolled ascent. A supervised introduction is about learning the environment, not collecting an impressive depth number.
Afterward, allow for showers, changing and confirmation of photo delivery before moving on. Bring dry clothes, a towel, drinking water and a wet bag, with minimal valuables. Ask about download deadlines and sharing arrangements for cloud-delivered images; raise any objection to public use of your likeness before booking. Keep the operator’s details and the session information. If unusual symptoms develop afterward, tell medical personnel that you have recently scuba dived instead of assuming it is fatigue or seasickness.

Flying and altitude: plan your departure first
Pressure changes make flying after scuba a planning issue even for a shallow introductory experience. For asymptomatic recreational air divers with aircraft cabin altitudes of about 2,000–8,000 feet, DAN recommends at least 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive and at least 18 hours after multiple dives in a day or diving on multiple days. These are minimum recommendations: longer intervals reduce risk but do not guarantee avoidance of decompression sickness. Follow any stricter instructor, medical or product requirements.
Bear Diving’s direct product states no flying for 24 hours before or after the experience. That is a product policy, not a universal medical rule for all dive shops. Give the shop both inbound and outbound flight times and confirm whether the selected Klook package follows the same requirement. Driving to high elevation after diving also involves altitude exposure. Discuss mountain accommodation or mountain-crossing plans with your instructor and seek medical guidance where needed.
Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, chest pain, numbness, weakness, significant vertigo or other unusual symptoms after diving, and explain the recent dive. Do not fly or wait for a scheduled interval to expire before seeking care. Read DAN’s flying-after-diving guidance for planning; this article cannot provide individual medical clearance.
Seasons, sea conditions and turtles
Xiaoliuqiu has diving products in different seasons, and Bear Diving publishes summer and winter sessions. Assess your need for warmth in winter, and do not assume that summer holiday season removes weather uncertainty. Waves, currents and entry conditions affect the dive decision. Visibility, turtle encounters and photographs cannot be predicted from the month alone. Treat seasonality as background; the day’s professional assessment determines whether and where the session proceeds.
A changed site, shortened session or cancellation may be appropriate risk management rather than poor service. Understand rescheduling and refunds, and keep a flexible land-based alternative. In the water, do not touch, disturb or feed turtles, chase them or block their path to the surface. Avoid coral contact. If turtles do not appear, focus on observing the environment and becoming comfortable instead of trying to recover the price by swimming farther or approaching wildlife more closely.
Read cancellation terms by scenario
Separate voluntary cancellation, disrupted transport, operator weather cancellation, failure to meet health requirements and withdrawal after entering the water. Bear Diving’s direct page allows rescheduling or refunds when the instructor cancels for weather, while listing restrictions for health ineligibility and absent turtle sightings. Those direct-channel conditions do not automatically apply to Klook. Read the selected package’s exact cutoff and terms; a “free cancellation” label still has a deadline in a particular time zone.
Before payment, retain the package name, inclusions, medical and age requirements, cancellation conditions and confirmed meeting pin. If a ferry company suspends service, contact the dive booking channel promptly and keep the notice and order records. Hotel or ferry refunds do not automatically trigger an activity refund. If you feel unwell on the day, put safety first and handle the cost afterward rather than concealing your condition. Clear terms support a decision; they are not a reason to enter the water unsafely.
For the boat leg, see the Donggang–Xiaoliuqiu ferry guide before matching your activity time to a sailing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I try scuba without certification?
Choose an introductory product designed for uncertified guests and supervised by a qualified professional. Medical, age and product requirements still apply, as do briefing and practice. Completion does not automatically award certification or independent-diving privileges.
Does one-to-one mean every non-swimmer can join?
No. One-to-one describes supervision, not universal suitability. Explain swimming ability, anxiety and health concerns for the operator to assess. You must be able to understand instruction, participate in practice and communicate discomfort.
Is the meeting address No. 87 or No. 88-8?
The public sources differ: PADI lists No. 87, while the operator’s scuba meeting field lists No. 88-8. Use your order voucher and the shop’s confirmed pin. Verify with the date, order number and activity type before departure; do not simply wait at the shore.
How deep will I go, and will I finish?
The instructor sets progress and depth according to training standards, conditions and your response. Completion and a particular depth are not guaranteed. A maximum is not a target. Signal pain, panic or discomfort immediately; stopping safely is a valid outcome.
Can I fly out of Kaohsiung that evening?
Do not assume so. Plan around your dive history, DAN guidance and the product policy. Bear Diving’s direct page additionally states no flights within 24 hours before or after the activity. Have the shop check your exact flights and change the activity or transport if necessary; shallow depth is not an exemption.
Are turtle sightings guaranteed on a try-dive?
No. Conditions, visibility and wildlife movements change. A session without turtles is not the same as an operator cancellation. Read the refund conditions and accept necessary site changes or an early end for safety.
