Daxueshan Autumn Leaves 2026: Timing, Bus 889 and Trail Closures

Daxueshan is a good choice for mid- to high-elevation forest scenery and autumn colour. Begin with November–January, paying particular attention to current reports in December. The road and park do not turn red together: the 35K entrance area, higher Xiaoxueshan visitor-information area and individual trails can have different conditions.

For 2026, separate a park foliage walk from a mountain traverse. Kilometres 8–10 of the Shaolai–Xiaoxueshan National Trail are closed for construction from 3 September 2026 to 6 March 2027. A first foliage visit is better built around open park areas and a walk that leaves a comfortable return margin.

When to visit: November–January, rather than assuming October

The recurring foliage information covers November into January. December reports in 2024 and 2025 help show the winter-colour character of the area, but they are not a 2026 percentage-colour report or peak-date forecast. Use this year’s location-specific photographs before travelling.

Colourful trees include Taiwan red-bark maple, other maples and sweetgum. Sweetgum is botanically different from Acer maples. Evergreen forest remains in the background, so a mixture of green, yellow, orange and red is more realistic than expecting every slope to become one colour.

Check whether a photograph comes from 35K, 49K or a particular trail. Elevation, aspect and tree type influence conditions. With only half a day, one area in good condition is usually a better choice than repeatedly driving farther in search of another tree.

    Understand the park’s different areas

The 35K admission checkpoint and 49K Xiaoxueshan information area are separate parts of the journey. Parking, accommodation, services and trailheads are not all at one point. Use the official park page and maps to establish where your transport actually drops you.

Past December reports mention the checkpoint, Xiaoxueshan information area and road between 35K and 49K. These are observation references, not invitations to stop at every bend. Only leave the car at a safe, permitted parking location; never block passing space or stand in the road for a photograph.

Mumadao, the small sacred-tree trail and other forest routes have their own gradients and distances. If adding Tianchi or the large sacred tree, check the current route, return distance and turnaround time. A photograph of a destination does not prove everyone in your group can comfortably reach it.

    The 2026 closure: Shaolai–Xiaoxueshan kilometres 8–10

The official trail status lists partial opening from 3 September 2026 to 6 March 2027, with kilometres 8–10 closed for works. These are trail kilometre markers, not the same-numbered positions on Daxueshan Forest Road.

Compare any planned connection with the closure map before leaving. Do not seek an unofficial detour around construction or treat an old GPS track as access permission. Open short walks and a closed through-route are separate questions. Return to a confirmed open section if a junction is unclear.

Yuanzui-style climbing or traverses have different fitness, technical and equipment demands from a family foliage walk. Sharing the Daxueshan approach does not make every mountain activity suitable for the same group or day.

Without a car: compare 889 and the weekend 252

    Option Planning requirement Trade-off
Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 889 Daily service with telephone seat reservation Build the walk around actual stops and departures
Fengyuan Bus 252 Saturday/Sunday service with Dongshi connections A weekend alternative, not a weekday assumption
Driving Fuel in Dongshi and check road and vehicle restrictions More flexibility but greater driving responsibility

Reserve 889 seats with Chung Taiwan Bus instead of assuming space because the route exists. Route 252 is listed as a weekend service, and reaching Dongshi from Fengyuan or HSR Taichung takes additional time. Our Fengyuan and Dongshi to Daxueshan guide covers reservations and return planning.

Choose the return bus and stop before setting your walking distance. A bus to one park stop is not an unlimited internal shuttle. Overnight visitors should confirm luggage and the last transfer with their accommodation. For a Taichung base, use our Taichung accommodation guide, then include the early connection to Fengyuan.

Driving: fuel in Dongshi and leave a daylight margin

There are no filling stations along the forest road. Complete fuel and essential supplies in Dongshi before climbing. Check the vehicle’s condition, leave time for bends and mist, and revise plans after heavy rain or reports of falling rocks.

Large-vehicle restrictions apply above 15K. A group operator must verify a suitable vehicle; the presence of a public bus does not mean every tour coach is allowed. Park only in permitted areas without blocking bends, narrow shoulders or trail entrances.

General park hours are 06:30–17:00, with the visitor centre open 08:00–17:00. Non-overnight visitors must leave by 17:00. That is not the moment to start back from the farthest trail. If sunset or night scenery is a goal, arrange appropriate accommodation and follow park rules instead of improvising a car-camping stay.

A day trip or an overnight visit

For one day, travel up early, choose one main area, take a lunch break and add a short afternoon section only if time allows. If traffic or fog delays you, remove the farthest walk first. Forest scenery and nature observation can still make the trip worthwhile when leaf colour is modest.

One night spreads the walking across two days, but a room is not blanket permission for unrestricted night activity. Confirm meals, check-in and next-day transport. Camping, sleeping in vehicles and outdoor cooking are prohibited in the park. Read cancellation terms if foliage conditions are your main reason for booking.

For children or older visitors, use a route with a manageable turnaround and avoid making a particular tree or summit compulsory. Carry warm clothing, rain protection, water and shoes with grip. Limited-mobility visitors should check gradients and facilities section by section.

    Enjoy wildlife without chasing it

Daxueshan offers opportunities to observe forest birds and other wildlife, but sightings are not guaranteed. Keep a respectful distance, avoid feeding or sound playback, and never block traffic to follow an animal. Stay on the path even if a bird disappears into the trees.

When sharing foliage photographs, identify the location and date instead of declaring the entire mountain at peak. A suitable open route and an unhurried return are the best finish to a Daxueshan autumn day.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the usual foliage season?

Approximately November–January, with December worth monitoring closely.

Is full colour guaranteed in October?

No. High elevation does not mean every location peaks in October.

Do 35K and 49K have the same conditions?

Not necessarily. Elevation, terrain and tree type differ.

Can I walk the entire Shaolai–Xiaoxueshan trail in 2026?

No. Kilometres 8–10 are closed from 3 September 2026 to 6 March 2027.

Are those closure markers on the forest road?

No. They refer to the national trail; consult its own closure map.

    Does 889 require a reservation?

Yes. Reserve by telephone with the operator and confirm the date and stops.

Can I use 252 on weekdays?

The current park information lists Saturday/Sunday operation, so do not plan it as a weekday service.

Is there fuel on the mountain road?

No. Fill up in Dongshi before ascending.

Can I sleep in my car for sunrise?

Vehicle sleeping and camping are prohibited; arrange permitted accommodation.

Can a family foliage walk casually include Yuanzui?

No. Such climbing routes require separate fitness, technical and equipment planning.
