How to plan a visit to Kenting Aquarium

Allow four to six hours for a first visit to the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, usually shortened to NMMBA or called Kenting Aquarium. That gives you time for its three main aquarium galleries, a meal and a few unhurried stops. With only three hours, choose two galleries that match your interests rather than rushing through every building.

The aquarium is in Checheng, Pingtung County, at No. 2, Houwan Road. It is not beside Kenting’s main street. A trip from Kaohsiung involves a substantial road journey and a final connection to the museum, so a day visit works best when the aquarium is the main attraction. Staying in Hengchun or Checheng makes an early start easier.

For autumn 2026, regular opening hours are 09:00–17:00, with ticket sales and admission ending at 16:00. The museum normally closes on Tuesdays, with exceptions for national holidays, consecutive holiday periods and school holidays. Summer and certain Lunar New Year dates have extended hours. Check your actual travel date before committing to transport.

Understand the layout before choosing a route

From the entrance, you pass the visitor facilities and outdoor plazas before reaching the main exhibition area. Waters of Taiwan and Coral Kingdom are in the nearer group of buildings; Waters of the World is farther behind them. The Whale Explorium sits to the outer side of Waters of Taiwan. Visiting the three aquarium galleries therefore does not mean you have covered every exhibition on the site.

Open the aquarium map to locate the galleries before choosing your first stop. The illustrated map shows relative positions rather than exact walking times. Allow a planning buffer of 10–15 minutes when changing galleries, particularly with a stroller or someone who needs the lifts.

Use the guide to locate galleries and visitor facilities. Printed prices and programme times may be outdated; check ticket information and the day’s talk schedule separately.

Gallery Main reasons to visit Best use of your time
    Waters of Taiwan
    台灣水域館
Freshwater habitats, estuaries and the Open Ocean tank Follow the journey from mountain streams to the sea, then pause at the large tank
    Coral Kingdom
    珊瑚王國館
Coral reefs, underwater tunnel, shipwreck habitats and beluga observation Prioritize it for the tunnel and marine mammals, but allow time for the smaller tanks
    Waters of the World
    世界水域館
Kelp forest, seals, penguins, puffins, ancient oceans and deep-sea themes Keep a continuous block here if you want several animal talks without crossing the site

Waters of Taiwan: follow the habitats, not just the biggest fish

This gallery works especially well as an introduction. Streams, estuaries and open water support different kinds of life; following the sequence gives the displays a clear story. With children, a simple question such as “Where would a fish hide in this habitat?” can make the smaller tanks as interesting as the large ones.

The Open Ocean tank is worth a proper pause. Watch where the fish gather, how schools turn and how animals use different levels of the water. The scheduled feeding commentary adds another layer, but the tank remains worth seeing between sessions. Touch-pool access follows its own schedule and staff instructions; it is not permission to touch animals elsewhere.

Coral Kingdom: the tunnel and belugas

The underwater tunnel puts fish above and beside you, making it one of the easiest places to spend longer than planned. Switch off your flash, avoid blocking the passage and move on once you have taken your photos. The adjacent reef and shipwreck-themed displays deserve time too, especially if the tunnel is busy.

Belugas are observed in Coral Kingdom, but there is no beluga feeding show. Look for swimming, surfacing and other ordinary behaviour, and listen to any interpretation offered during your visit. Do not build an itinerary around a performance described in an old travel post.

Waters of the World: more than penguins

The kelp forest, seals and polar animals share this gallery with displays about ancient oceans and the deep sea. Some sections use digital interpretation rather than live animals. If wildlife observation is your priority, locate the animal habitats first and use the remaining time for the other exhibits.

The polar section is cool, so bring a light layer for children or anyone sensitive to air-conditioning. A current maintenance notice schedules the Polar Exploration area for closure from September 29 to October 12, 2026. That notice concerns a particular area, not a blanket closure of Waters of the World or the penguin exhibit.

Choose feeding talks that work together

The most useful approach is to choose one must-see session, arrange the neighbouring exhibits around it, then add another session that fits naturally. Several talks overlap. In the October 7, 2026 programme, the Open Ocean tank, seals and puffins all have a 10:00 session; the 11:00 penguin session overlaps with the underwater tunnel’s “Dancing with Fish.”

    Session Reference times Planning consequence
Open Ocean feeding commentary 10:00, 13:00, 16:30 The lunchtime session suits later arrivals; check transport before committing to the final one
Underwater tunnel: Dancing with Fish 11:00, 14:30 Choose this or the 11:00 penguin session, rather than trying to attend both
Seals and puffins Seals: 10:00, 14:30
    Puffins: 10:00
Being in the same gallery does not make simultaneous sessions consecutive
Kelp forest and penguins Kelp forest: 14:00
    Penguins: 11:00, 15:00
An afternoon in Waters of the World can link these without a cross-site rush

These times illustrate how to plan; check the programme displayed on your visit date. Leave room for toilets, lunch and moving between viewing areas. Arrive a little early if a clear view matters, but there is no need to spend the whole day holding places for talks.

    Two practical aquarium itineraries

Arriving around 09:00: a relaxed five- to six-hour visit

    1. 09:00–10:15: Waters of Taiwan. Follow the habitats toward the Open Ocean tank and, if the programme matches, stop for the 10:00 commentary.
    2. 10:15–11:30: Coral Kingdom. Explore the reefs, tunnel and beluga area. The 11:00 tunnel session fits this route, but missing it need not mean waiting for the next one.
    3. 11:30–12:30: lunch and a proper break. Eat near the area you are already visiting. Extend the break if a child needs a nap.
    4. 12:30–15:15: Waters of the World. Allow time to move there, then explore at an easy pace. Choose one or two of the afternoon kelp forest, seal and penguin sessions.
    5. After 15:15: optional exhibits or the journey out. Add the Whale Explorium or a special exhibition only if you still have time and energy. Otherwise collect belongings and head toward your transport.

This route reduces the need to keep moving the whole family between buildings after lunch. If puffins are your main reason for coming, start in Waters of the World instead and leave the Open Ocean tank until later. Choosing a different first gallery is sensible when it serves a specific interest.

Arriving around 12:30: choose two priorities

For an afternoon visit, decide whether your main pairing is the Open Ocean tank and penguins, or the underwater tunnel and belugas. For the first, start in Waters of Taiwan around the lunchtime session, then move to Waters of the World. For the second, give Coral Kingdom a full visit before choosing one other gallery.

Allowing 60–90 minutes in each of two galleries, plus breaks and walking, already fills most of an afternoon. Eat before starting if you would otherwise rush lunch to catch a talk. After 15:00, a focused visit to one gallery is a more realistic aim than a complete tour of the aquarium.

Families with young children should treat the final gallery as optional. If everyone is still happily watching a single tank, there is little benefit in interrupting that moment merely to complete a checklist.

Tickets: separate admission from overnight stays and special activities

Standard daytime admission is NT$450. The concession rate is NT$250, while the senior ticket for visitors aged 65 and over is NT$225. Young children and visitors meeting specified disability-related conditions may qualify for free admission. Carry age or eligibility documents, and ask the ticket office about children close to the age or height thresholds rather than guessing which category applies.

A general admission ticket is for the daytime visit. Overnight programmes, behind-the-scenes experiences, penguin activities and meal bundles have their own inclusions. In particular, an activity price may exclude admission. Check the exact package before assuming that the cheapest listing covers both entry and the experience.

Some aquarium vouchers require exchange at the ticket counter rather than direct entry at the gate. Review validity, redemption and cancellation terms before you travel. The standard admission option below is relevant if you want to explore the main galleries independently.

Getting there: solve the final connection before you set off

    From HSR Zuoying or Kaohsiung

The 9189 Kenting Express provides the main southbound bus journey from Zuoying. A straightforward option for first-time visitors is to continue to Hengchun Bus Station (恆春轉運站) and change to a 101 service that actually calls at the aquarium. This involves waiting as well as travel, so do not use the express-bus journey time as your expected arrival time at the ticket gate.

Be careful with Haishengguan Transfer Station (海生館轉乘站). Its name does not mean it is at the aquarium entrance. Route 101 and its principal aquarium branches no longer stop there; the operator directs passengers to Puqian Road Intersection (埔墘路口). If you intend to transfer in this area, confirm the walk and correct direction in advance. With luggage or young children, an arranged final-leg taxi may be easier than an unfamiliar roadside transfer.

See the Kaohsiung to Kenting transport guide for the Zuoying boarding arrangements, reservations and main stops. The aquarium is not at Xiaowan, the southern end of the express route; staying on to Kenting’s main street adds a return journey.

    From Hengchun, Nanwan or Kenting

Route 101 has several branches, and not every departure visits the aquarium. Check the weekday or holiday timetable, branch letter and aquarium column together. For the return journey, also distinguish services continuing to Kenting from those ending in Hengchun.

If you have a booked train from Zuoying, work backwards from it before deciding when to leave the museum. A 16:30 aquarium talk can conflict with the bus that best suits your onward trip. An available bus after closing does not automatically provide a comfortable train connection.

Northbound 9189 passengers boarding at Haishengguan Transfer Station queue on site rather than using it as a guaranteed reserved-seat boarding point. Returning through Hengchun may therefore be worth considering when your onward journey depends on a reservation. Allow a generous road-traffic buffer whichever option you choose.

    Driving or using a taxi

Use the full museum name or No. 2, Houwan Road as the navigation destination. Parking is charged separately from admission: the posted rate is NT$50 per entry for a car and NT$20 for a motorcycle. Allow time to park, walk in and redeem any voucher.

The service desk can help arrange a taxi. Ask before everyone is tired and the museum is closing, and make sure the pickup location and final destination are clear. A nearby place on a map is not a guarantee that a taxi will be waiting.

    Food, facilities and wet-weather planning

The complex has restaurants and other food outlets, including dining options around Coral Kingdom and Waters of the World. Eat close to the gallery you are already exploring instead of making an unnecessary trip back across the site. Menus and individual outlets’ operating arrangements can vary, so check suitable choices early if anyone has dietary requirements.

Nursing facilities are available around the main lobby’s upper floor and in Waters of the World. Ask at the service desk about stroller or wheelchair loans and temporary luggage storage. Combining these practical jobs before starting the first gallery is easier than returning halfway through the visit.

Much of the visit is indoors, making the aquarium a useful option in ordinary rain. Arrival areas, plazas and some movement between buildings are outside, however. Bring rain protection and shoes with grip. In hot weather, carry water and sun protection; if children plan to use the outdoor water-play areas when open, pack a change of clothes.

Keep food in designated dining areas. Do not feed animals, tap aquarium glass or use flash photography. These simple rules make a bigger difference to a pleasant visit than trying to see every talk.

Is sleeping at the aquarium worth it?

The overnight programme is a two-day, one-night educational experience, with guided activities and a stay beside the exhibits. Its appeal is the chance to observe the aquarium after daytime visitors leave and learn more through the organised programme. Standard arrangements include dinner, a late snack and breakfast, with exact activities depending on the selected package.

Sleeping areas are shared, open spaces rather than private hotel rooms. Exhibit lighting is reduced to reflect the animals’ routines, so do not expect brightly illuminated tanks throughout the night. Families choosing the same area also share the general sleeping environment.

It is a good fit for travellers who enjoy guided activities and can follow group meeting times. A daytime visit followed by a hotel is often better for early-sleeping children, light sleepers or anyone facing a long drive the next day. If you have booked an overnight package, follow its admission and check-in instructions before buying separate daytime tickets.

The “0.1 mm Between Me and the Penguins” husbandry experience is a separate seasonal activity, currently described for February–June with age, capacity and biosecurity conditions. It is not required to see penguins through the normal exhibit windows, and an autumn visitor should not assume it can be added on arrival. Other behind-the-scenes options also need their own booking and inclusion checks.

What to combine with the aquarium

A short walk around Houwan can work after the aquarium if weather, energy and transport allow. For many families, a full visit followed by dinner in Hengchun is already enough. If you are staying in Checheng, keep the evening close to your accommodation instead of driving farther south simply to add another stop.

On a Kaohsiung day trip, make the aquarium the main event. Adding Eluanbi, Longpan Park and Kenting’s main street means accepting less time in the galleries and a much longer day. A second day on the peninsula is the more comfortable solution if both marine life and the coastal scenery are priorities.

    Kenting Aquarium FAQ

Can I see all three galleries in three hours?

You can move through the main spaces, but that leaves less time for commentary, meals and repeated stops. Two carefully chosen galleries are a better three-hour target; allow four to six hours for a fuller visit.

Where are the belugas, and is there a feeding show?

The beluga area is in Coral Kingdom. There is no beluga feeding show. Observe the animals and follow the day’s interpretation arrangements without expecting a particular behaviour or guaranteed viewing position.

Is the aquarium a completely indoor rainy-day attraction?

The main galleries are indoors, but the entrance, plazas and parts of the journey between buildings are exposed. In severe weather, check the museum and transport situation before leaving your accommodation.

Does the aquarium transfer bus stop put me at the gate?

No. Haishengguan Transfer Station is a roadside stop away from the museum. Route 101 no longer stops there; confirm the connection via Puqian Road Intersection or transfer to an aquarium-bound service in Hengchun.

Can an overnight stay replace a normal hotel night?

It can form part of your trip, but it is a scheduled group experience with shared sleeping space. Choose it for the programme rather than expecting private-room comfort.

Before travelling, confirm your opening date, one or two priority talks, ticket inclusions and return connection. Leave the rest of the visit flexible enough to stop when something catches your attention.
