The simplest trip from Ruifang is bus 788 to Jinguashi’s Gold Museum, with the coast added only after you have worked out the return. If the museum is your main destination, retrace the journey to Ruifang. For Golden Waterfall and Shuinandong, compare routes 891 and 856. The important decision is how you will leave the coast; buses that mention Jiufen or Jinguashi do not all serve the same places.

Choose your transport
| Your destination | Main approach | Check before leaving |
|---|---|---|

| Several stops or a late coastal visit | Agree a taxi or private transfer in advance | Pickup, waiting, return and total price |
Board at Ruifang’s District Square
After arriving by train, find the Jinguashi-bound bus stop by the District Square and Ruifang police station. The Gold Museum’s current directions send passengers here for route 788. Do not join the first bus queue outside the railway station without checking the stop and direction. Show the driver 金瓜石(黃金博物館) if the destination display is unfamiliar.
Allow time to leave the station, find the correct pavement and queue. A train arrival is not a bus departure. During holiday controls, follow the local boarding signs. Keeping your group together before walking to the stop also avoids an unnecessary split between the station entrance and the square.
The museum and the coast are separate stages
Bus 788 passes Jiufen on its way to Jinguashi. Stay aboard if the Gold Museum is your destination rather than following the crowd off at Jiufen Old Street. On arrival, locate the return stop and the signs for 891 and 856 before starting your visit. The museum, Quanjitang Temple, Golden Waterfall and Shuinandong occupy different parts of the hillside; reaching Jinguashi does not deliver you to all of them.
Give the museum the main block of your day, then decide whether the weather and departures leave room for the coast. This is a suggested travel sequence, not a packaged bus itinerary. If the visit runs long, returning directly to Ruifang is preferable to rushing down to the sea and relying on a tight final connection.
Understand the one-direction 891 loop
Official route information shows 891 running from the Gold Museum past Quanjitang, Golden Waterfall, Changren and Shuinandong, then continuing through hillside communities back to the museum. It completes a loop rather than reversing along the same road. At Shuinandong, check the onward sequence and the vehicle’s approach; an opposite-direction 891 is not the way to reverse your outward ride.
The listed departures from Jinguashi are 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00 on both weekdays and holidays. There is no listed noon departure. These are origin times, not boarding times at Shuinandong. The service uses a one-zone fare; separate boardings follow the applicable fare rules. Check the live official page again before travel.
Choose 856 for the mountain–coast sequence
Route 856 links Ruifang, Jiufen, Jinguashi, Golden Waterfall and Shuinandong before continuing along the northeast coast. It is useful when its departures fit your planned stops, but it should not be treated as an on-demand sightseeing shuttle. Every stopover creates another wait. For a manageable first trip, the museum and one coastal stop are a better starting point than every attraction on the full route.
For a direct return toward Ruifang from Shuinandong, also check the short-route 886, officially listed between Shuinandong Visitor Centre and Ruifang. It is extremely limited: the listed departures from Shuinandong Visitor Centre are 08:55 and 17:45 on weekdays, and only 08:55 on holidays. It is therefore not an afternoon return fallback on a holiday; check 856 or arrange a vehicle instead. It serves a different journey from the mountain route through Jiufen. Decide whether you want Ruifang, the museum or another coastal stop before choosing the bus; a route number appearing in a local guide is not enough.
Budget for waiting before buying a pass
The difficult part is often fitting departures together, especially when traffic builds around Jiufen. For a half-day visit, prioritise the museum. For a fuller mountain-and-coast day, choose the downhill journey and the return to Ruifang first, then fit sightseeing between them. Never substitute the origin’s last departure for a passing time at a coastal stop.
Routes 788, 891, 856 and 886 do not become one unlimited service because they appear on the same itinerary. Before buying a 856 day ticket or promotional bundle, count the 856 journeys you can actually take and compare their fares with the ticket’s scope. One short 856 ride plus other buses or a taxi may not justify a pass. Museum admission is separate from ordinary bus travel.
Rain, luggage and late coastal visits
Leave large bags at your accommodation when possible; do not assume the museum has space for every suitcase. For pushchairs or wheelchairs, confirm the bus vehicle, boarding environment and visitor route separately. A private vehicle can simplify transfers, but its driver needs the dimensions of mobility equipment as well as the number of passengers.
Walking down the mountain road is a poor default solution to a missed bus, particularly in rain, fog or darkness. If your goal is an evening coastal view, agree your departure transport, pickup point and price before going. The fact that a viewpoint remains accessible does not mean 891 or 856 still offers a useful return. Shorten the coastal stage if conditions worsen.
Route information before you travel
Open the official route information and transport map. Recheck your date, direction and exact boarding stop before departure.
If you plan to enter the museum, compare admission options. Check the selected package’s entry procedure and included facilities; admission should not be assumed to include bus travel or every activity.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct train to Jinguashi?
No. Travel by train to Ruifang, then change to a Jinguashi-bound bus or arranged vehicle. Include the walk out of the station and the bus wait.
Should I get off at Jiufen for the Gold Museum?
No. On a Jinguashi-bound 788, continue to the Gold Museum stop. Jiufen Old Street is not the museum entrance.
Can 891 take me back from Shuinandong?
Its official sequence continues around a one-direction loop to Jinguashi. Check that day’s vehicle and passing time; it does not reverse along the outward road.
Does 891 leave Jinguashi at noon?
The current list has 10:00, 11:00 and hourly departures from 13:00 to 17:00, with no noon service. Recheck before your visit.
Is 17:00 the last 891 at Shuinandong?
That is the listed departure from Jinguashi, not the time at Shuinandong. Use the official stop prediction and operational notices for the intermediate stop.
Do all 788 buses continue to the coast?
Do not assume so. Coastal extensions depend on the service and day. Route 856 lists Shuinandong, but every journey still needs a direction and timetable check.
How do I return directly to Ruifang?
Compare the Ruifang-bound 856 with suitable coastal services such as the short-route 886. Check the exact stop and departure before deciding to bypass the museum.
Does a museum ticket include bus travel?
An ordinary admission ticket is not a bus pass. Read the selected product’s inclusions and pay public-transport fares separately where required.
Can I continue to Fulong the same day?
Investigate 856 connections, but join up all departures first. Combining the museum, Shuinandong and Fulong adds waiting and makes the day considerably less flexible.
What changes with children in wet weather?
Make the museum the main visit and drop the coast if wind, rain or the return gap becomes inconvenient. A mountain-road walk should not be the fallback.
