Taichung to Sun Moon Lake: choose the right bus boarding point

The main public-transport option from Taichung to Sun Moon Lake in 2026 is the 6670 Sun Moon Lake bus family. If you arrive by high-speed rail, connect at HSR Taichung in Wuri. If you are staying downtown or arriving at TRA Taichung, compare the city boarding stops instead of traveling out to HSR unnecessarily.

The usual lake-arrival decision is Shuishe, followed by a separate connection if your hotel is in Ita Thao or farther around the shore. A ticket labeled “Sun Moon Lake” does not mean door-to-door transport to every lake hotel.

    Bus or a prearranged transfer?

Your starting point First option to compare Planning reference Check before committing
HSR Taichung 6670 Sun Moon Lake service at the HSR bus area Ordinary one-way reference NT$166; access guidance gives about 90 minutes The actual branch, departure and traffic margin
Downtown Taichung Gancheng or the Taichung station-area stop Ordinary one-way reference NT$193 Exact stop location and direction
Group with luggage or a remote hotel Confirmed private point-to-point transfer Quote depends on route, date and party Address coverage, baggage, child seats and return
Visitors wanting a structured sightseeing day A tour explicitly including Taichung transport Compare the complete itinerary Pickup point, stops and end location

Ticket category, payment method and branch can affect the amount. The roughly 90-minute HSR-to-lake reference is not a holiday guarantee and excludes waiting time.

From downtown, allow about two hours on the bus

One example in the stop timetable leaves Gancheng at 08:45, calls at HSR Taichung at 09:10 and reaches Sun Moon Lake at 10:40. That is 1 hour 55 minutes from downtown or 90 minutes from HSR on the same service. Other branches differ, so match an actual bus to your HSR arrival rather than simply adding 90 minutes to the train’s arrival time.

Two ordinary single fares total NT$386 from downtown or NT$332 from HSR. This is a budgeting calculation, not a discounted return-ticket offer. Local buses, boats and the ropeway are separate. For a simple visit around Shuishe, do not buy a sightseeing bundle unless you will use its extra inclusions.

From HSR Taichung: first floor, Exit 5, Platform 3

    1. Leave the HSR paid area after arriving in Wuri.
    2. Follow coach-terminal and Exit 5 signs down to the first floor, using the elevator route if needed.
    3. Find Platform 3 by Exit 5 and confirm the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Sun Moon Lake service.
    4. Check the direction and branch before boarding. A bus terminating in Puli is not automatically your direct lake service.

This boarding guidance comes from the Sun Moon Lake access page. Use the HSR Taichung floor map to locate the bus level, and follow temporary station notices if a stand changes. This is separate from downtown Taichung railway station and the Xinwuri train platforms.

From downtown: Gancheng and the railway-station stop

Nantou Bus’s Gancheng office is at No. 35-8, Section 1, Shuangshi Road. It is a city coach boarding point, not the HSR station. If you prefer an intermediate stop near TRA Taichung, check the current listing named Taichung Station (Minzu Road Intersection) and make sure you are on the lake-bound side.

Do not walk to a random “Taichung Station” bus platform based on an old photograph. For a first visit with luggage, confirming the route at the operator’s office can be simpler than trying to identify a roadside stop at the last moment.

Compare the operator’s boarding-location guidance and outbound and return stop lists. If you are choosing a hotel for the night before, our Taichung accommodation guide helps put the morning departure in context.

Route 6670 is a family of services, not one identical bus

Branches differ in routing and intermediate stops. Some travel via Puli or Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village; the 6670B “direct” label does not mean a nonstop vehicle. Check the stopping list and final destination on the departure you intend to use.

If your real destination is Xiangshan, a theme park or a particular hotel, verify that stop rather than treating the whole lake as one point. For the return, check whether the service reaches HSR Taichung or the downtown stop you need. “Back to Taichung” is too vague when another train is waiting.

A bus ticket, a seat reservation and a lake pass are different

A round-trip ticket does not necessarily reserve a seat. Check the Nantou Bus reservation entry point for the offered dates, direction, payment method and reporting deadline. Follow the conditions of the specific booking, especially around public holidays.

Boat, ropeway and bicycle packages serve different purposes. A boat ticket alone cannot replace the bus from Taichung, and a local lake-circuit bus pass is not automatically an intercity ticket. Read each included item before comparing prices.

    After arrival in Shuishe

Shuishe and Ita Thao are different places around the lake. Check your hotel’s actual location and arrange the last leg by a suitable local bus, boat or hotel pickup. With luggage, verify sailing hours, baggage conditions and the walk after the pier before treating a sightseeing boat as a reliable hotel-transfer plan.

For a late arrival or an outlying property, ask the hotel about a prearranged pickup and what happens if the bus is delayed. The local lake journey and the long-distance service to Taichung have separate schedules.

Private transfers: compare the exact route and luggage allowance

A prebooked vehicle may suit a group going from HSR straight to a specific hotel. The product below is transport only, without attraction admission or guiding, and offers several Taichung pickup choices. Select the correct direction and verify the hotel’s coverage before paying.

The listing limits each traveler to one 24-inch suitcase plus a carry-on and excludes wheelchairs and nonfolding strollers. It should not be treated as a universal accessible-transfer option. Confirm child-seat needs, passenger count, date, total quote and cancellation terms.

Availability and service details depend on the selected package.

    Protect the return connection

Pick a workable return bus before deciding the day’s last attraction. If continuing by HSR, allow for the journey back to the lake boarding point, the queue and motorway delays. Avoid making the final bus your only workable option.

Fireworks, swimming events and roadworks can change local access. Check the lake notices and operator announcements. Event shuttles have their own dates and boarding points; an old festival schedule is not the ordinary 6670 timetable.

    Taichung–Sun Moon Lake questions

Where do I board at the HSR station?

Guidance identifies the first floor, Exit 5, Platform 3. Follow current signs if temporary arrangements change.

Does a return ticket guarantee a seat?

Not necessarily. Check whether a separate reservation and reporting procedure applies.

Does the main bus take me to Ita Thao?

Do not assume so. Plan the connection from your actual alighting stop, commonly Shuishe, to your hotel.
