Choose your Christmas evening in Taipei by the kind of outing you want. Xinyi works well for shopping, dinner and a skyline backdrop. Daan Forest Park and Xinsheng South Road suit a slower walk through parks and neighbourhood streets. Gongguan offers something different again: historic waterworks architecture, seasonal lighting and dinner in a lively university district.
You do not need to cover all three in one night. Each can anchor an easy afternoon-and-evening plan, leaving time to eat, shelter from rain and enjoy the atmosphere.
Use the new announcements for dates in each Christmas area. Final programmes, evening entry arrangements and individual market dates still need checking before your visit.
Which Christmas area should you choose?
| Area | Best for | Main appeal | Useful MRT stations | 2026 announcement status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xinyi | First-time visitors, couples and friends | Department stores, dinner and city views | Taipei 101/World Trade Center; Taipei City Hall | Dates and individual displays depend on the new programme |
| Daan Forest Park and Xinsheng South Road | Families and relaxed walkers | Park paths, neighbourhood lights and nearby food | Daan Park; Dongmen | Dates and detailed programme depend on the new announcement |
| Gongguan and Taipei Water Park | Architecture lovers and families | Historic museum setting and evening illuminations | Gongguan | Check the new evening hours and admission arrangements |
See the separate official listings for Colourful Christmas in Taipei, Christmas Love Unlimited and Gongguan Christmas. A citywide programme listing does not confirm every department store’s display or guarantee a market on every date.

3 Christmas places in Taipei
1. Xinyi: combine a festive walk with shopping and Taipei 101

Xinyi is the easiest choice if your group wants several things from the same evening. You can browse shops, stop for dinner and walk between the department-store blocks without committing to a long cross-city journey. Start near Taipei 101/World Trade Center station and work towards Taipei City Hall station, or reverse the route if that puts you closer to your hotel at the end.
The district particularly suits first-time visitors and anyone who appreciates having indoor options nearby. With a stroller, a straightforward street-level route using marked crossings may be easier than navigating connections between several malls.
For context, the previous city Christmas programme ran from 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026 and included department stores and the square by City Hall’s east entrance. Those are historical details, not a confirmed list of this season’s installations. Do not build your itinerary around an old tree, character theme or market image without checking the new announcement. Previous official programme
Getting there: use Taipei 101/World Trade Center on the Red Line or Taipei City Hall on the Blue Line. Decide which end makes the return to your accommodation easiest before you start walking.
Optional booking: if you want an observatory visit before the street walk, compare Taipei 101 ticket options and available dates. Check the selected floor, entry time and any nationality restrictions. These are ordinary attraction products unless a specific package states otherwise; they do not automatically include a Christmas event or New Year’s Eve fireworks access. Our Taipei 101 ticket guide explains the main choices.
2. Daan Forest Park and Xinsheng South Road: a slower family evening

Choose this area when the outing matters more than collecting photographs of every display. Start with the park, follow the nearby streets as far as your group feels comfortable, then finish with dinner towards Dongmen and Yongkang Street. Families can keep the walk short rather than attempting the full length of Xinsheng South Road.
Daan Forest Park and Xinsheng South Road make a useful base for a relaxed Christmas walk; use the new announcement for event dates and the participating streets. Its appeal is the combination of park space, neighbourhood decorations and music. Wait for the detailed programme before timing a visit around a concert.
The 2025 edition included several church surroundings as well as the park, while market activities took place only on selected dates. That distinction matters: a good evening for a light walk may not be a market evening. If you enter a church, follow its visiting rules and respect services in progress. 2025 programme for reference
Getting there: Daan Park station on the Red Line is the natural starting point. Dongmen works well if you finish around Yongkang Street. A transport pass is worth comparing with your full day’s journeys, rather than buying solely for this short outing; see our Taipei MRT pass guide.
Where to stay: Daan Park or Dongmen can be useful bases if children or older relatives may need a break at the hotel. Compare districts in our Taipei accommodation guide, then check the actual walking route and cancellation terms for your dates. An ordinary room booking should not be assumed to include festival admission or special access.
3. Gongguan: historic architecture, lights and an easy dinner stop

The historic Museum of Drinking Water gives Gongguan a different visual character from Xinyi’s towers. If architecture is part of the appeal, consider arriving while there is still daylight, then leave time for food in the Gongguan shopping area. Whether you can remain from daytime into the evening depends on that day’s opening and ticket arrangements.
For Christmas displays, performances and evening access in Gongguan, use the new event announcement. Check the latest event page and Water Park announcements before committing to a date-sensitive booking.
This is a good fit for visitors who enjoy a focused outing rather than a long chain of stops. For families, one main activity plus dinner may be enough. Evening access also does not imply that every part of the park is operating, and previous years’ free-entry dates should not be reused.
Getting there: the operator directs visitors to Gongguan MRT station, Exit 4, then towards Siyuan Street and the Tingzhou Road junction, approximately five minutes on foot. The museum address is 1 Siyuan Street. Follow any event-specific entrance instructions on the day.
Admission planning: check the official evening-entry announcement before purchasing anything. Do not buy an unrelated attraction ticket or city pass expecting it to cover the Christmas programme.
A December extra: German Christmas Market at Taipei Expo Park
The Taipei market runs on 11–13 December 2026 at Corridor Plaza, Taipei Expo Park, 1 Yumen Street, near Yuanshan MRT Exit 1.
- Friday 11 and Saturday 12 December: 11:00–21:00
- Sunday 13 December: 11:00–20:00
Choose this weekend for a market-focused outing in Yuanshan. These hours apply to the Taipei market; other districts have separate lighting and event schedules. Organiser’s dates and hours
Easy ways to plan one evening
For your first visit to Taipei, spend the afternoon in Xinyi, have dinner nearby and finish with a walk through the shopping district. Add the Taipei 101 observatory only if you have a suitable entry slot and enough time.
For a family outing, start at Daan Forest Park and keep the illuminated-street walk short, with dinner around Dongmen. If a market or performance is important, choose the date once its 2026 schedule is confirmed.
For architecture and local food, make the Water Park your main stop and arrange dinner before or after it according to the published evening hours. Moving between districts is possible, but staying in one area usually makes for a more relaxed night.
Before you go
- Check lights, markets and performances separately; their dates may differ
- Treat historical photos and ordinary street views as location references, not a preview of this year’s displays
- Pack rain protection and comfortable shoes, and check accessible entrances when needed
- Pick accommodation around the return journey and review cancellation terms while programmes are still provisional
