Taipei to Wulai: take the MRT to Xindian, then bus 849 into the mountains
For a straightforward Wulai trip in 2026, use the Songshan–Xindian MRT line to its Xindian terminus, then take Sindian Bus 849 toward Wulai. This separates the city journey from the winding road into the valley. If you are already staying beside 849’s Taipei route, taking the bus directly can avoid a transfer, though it adds more road travel.
First decide what “Wulai” means for your booking: the old street, a particular hot-spring hotel, the waterfall or Yun Hsien Resort. Bus 849 reaches the village bus terminus. The walk, scenic trolley and cable car beyond that are separate parts of the day.
Choose around your final destination
| Option | Why choose it | Cost structure | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| MRT to Xindian + 849 | Clear city-to-mountain connection | Separate MRT fare; Xindian–Wulai adult cash fare NT$15 | Xindian is an intermediate bus stop, so seating is not guaranteed |
| 849 directly from its Taipei route | Avoids entering and leaving the MRT | Full route uses three fare sections; your trip may use fewer | More city stops and exposure to traffic |
| Prebooked car or taxi | Agreed pickup, bags and destination | Quote depends on vehicle, route, waiting and return arrangements | An outbound booking does not automatically include the ride home |
| Organized Wulai day tour | Transport and selected sightseeing coordinated | Read the package for trolley, cable car and admission inclusions | Fixed meeting arrangements and time at each stop |
| Hotel shuttle | May simplify a specific property’s last mile | Hotel-specific eligibility, fare and reservation rules | Not necessarily available to non-guests or on demand |
The 849 service page lists a general 15–20-minute headway and a three-section fare structure with buffer areas. This is not a promise that a bus will arrive exactly 15 minutes after you reach Xindian. Check the live direction and do not apply the Taipei-to-Wulai full-route charge automatically to the shorter Xindian leg.
Allow about 40 minutes on 849 from Xindian
Taipei Metro’s Xindian station guide gives approximately 40 minutes for the bus leg to Wulai. Add your MRT journey from Taipei and time at the bus stop. For a timed hot-spring appointment on a weekend, allow room for at least one additional bus rather than planning around immediate boarding.
Xindian lies within 849’s first fare-buffer zone, so Xindian–Wulai is a one-section journey: NT$15 at the adult cash fare. Boarding farther north in Taipei can cross additional fare sections. Tap a supported transport card when boarding and alighting. The scenic trolley is separately NT$50 one way; two Xindian–Wulai bus rides plus a return trolley ride total NT$130, before MRT, cable-car or bathing costs.
Step by step at Xindian
- Take a Green Line service toward Xindian and get off at G01 Xindian, the terminus. Xindian District Office is a different station; the Xiaobitan branch is not the line to Wulai.
- Follow the station exit to street level. Use the Xindian station map to locate the exit, lift and bus interchange area.
- Find the stop named MRT Xindian Station (Beixin Road), 捷運新店站(北新路), serving 849 toward Wulai. Both the route number and the direction matter.
- Confirm Wulai with the driver and follow the onboard payment instructions. If your hotel is on the road before the village, ask it for the correct stop before traveling.
- At Wulai terminus, continue on foot toward the old street or your arranged pickup.
The two-direction stop list and map help distinguish the Wulai-bound service and variants such as the Quchi community routing. If you require an accessible vehicle or boarding assistance, contact the operator using its route-page details. An accessible MRT station does not establish that every onward bus or path is suitable.
Taking 849 from Taipei without the MRT
Route 849 passes Taipei city stops, Gongguan, Jingmei and Xindian before heading into Wulai. It can be convenient if you are already next to the route. It is less attractive if finding the stop requires a long luggage walk and you could reach Xindian easily by MRT.
Do not interpret the route label “Taipei–Wulai” as a single fixed bay at every Taipei Main Station exit. Use the current stop list for your specific direction and boarding point. Outbound boarding and inbound alighting arrangements need not be identical.
Estimate the trip as a chain: accommodation to stop, waiting, road travel and the walk at Wulai. Weekend traffic and seasonal visitors can affect both queues and the mountain road. If you reserve a timed hot-spring session, understand its late-arrival policy and allow a buffer rather than relying on an exact blog journey time.
From the bus terminus to the old street and waterfall
The Wulai Atayal Museum’s directions describe an approximately five-minute walk from Wulai bus terminus along Xinwu Road into the old-street area to the museum. That is a useful village arrival reference, not a five-minute promise for every hotel or the waterfall.
For the scenic trolley, continue through the old street toward Lansheng Bridge and follow the local trolley-station signs. The Forestry Agency gives about 15 minutes on foot from the old street to the trolley entrance. This is a short railway inside the scenic area, not a train from Taipei. If walking toward the waterfall instead, use the designated public route and allow time to return. A trolley closure does not make its tracks a walking trail.
Hot-spring properties can be outside the old-street core or on a slope along the approach road. Get the exact bus stop, luggage route and shuttle arrangements from your accommodation. A booking described as “Wulai hot springs” does not identify one universal drop-off point.
Check the scenic trolley separately
The Forestry Agency’s Wulai trolley page lists 09:00–17:00 outside July and August, and 09:00–18:00 in those two months. Departures respond to demand rather than following a fixed minute-by-minute timetable. The standard full fare is NT$50 one way, separate from bus 849 and the Yun Hsien cable car.
Maintenance dates also need their own check. The 2026 calendar includes 6 October, 10 November and 1 December; do not calculate the November date yourself from a generic “first Tuesday” rule. For a trip in 2026, use the actual annual calendar and latest notices. Those named dates refer specifically to the 2026 schedule.
Plan the ride back before booking a late soak
Locate the Taipei-bound 849 stop when you arrive. Returning as far as Xindian and changing to MRT keeps the journey simple; if staying on the bus farther into Taipei, check where it actually lets you off and how you will reach your hotel from there.
The relevant last service is the one leaving Wulai in your direction on your date. A route-wide first/last-service field or a departure at the Taipei end should not be substituted for that. Check the MRT or any rail connection after the bus, and leave enough room for a full vehicle or a delayed descent.
The trolley or cable car may finish operating before the bus. That can lengthen your journey back to the village stop, so prioritize the waterfall, resort or hot-spring session instead of keeping all three until closing time. If severe rain or road controls affect the valley, follow instructions rather than treating a spa reservation as a reason to continue.
Bags, children and when to prebook a vehicle
A daypack is much easier than a suitcase on this trip. For an overnight stay with bags, a hotel shuttle or arranged vehicle can be worthwhile because you can agree on the actual final drop-off, especially for hillside accommodation. Specify passenger numbers, bag sizes, child-seat requirements and wheelchair needs before confirming the vehicle.
The road into Wulai has bends, and a rushed sequence of travel, meals and bathing can be uncomfortable for people prone to motion sickness. Even a tour with transport can involve bridges, steps and walking. Check the activity’s physical and accessibility requirements rather than assuming a minibus makes the entire visit effortless.
Transport-inclusive Wulai tours
These are sightseeing tours, not 849 tickets or standalone trolley passes. The Klook product limits hotel pickup to particular areas; the Trip.com product is presented as departing from Ximending. Compare the actual itinerary, language, admission and trolley/cable-car inclusions. Use the operator-confirmed meeting details for your selected package rather than an umbrella product title.
Availability, price and cancellation conditions depend on your selected date and package. Check how the itinerary changes if a local attraction is closed.
Wulai transport FAQs
1. Is the trolley closed every Tuesday?
No. It has monthly maintenance and an annual list of specified closure dates. For example, the 2026 list uses 10 November. Check the actual date list instead of applying a weekly rule.
2. Does a private car include trolley or cable-car tickets?
Not necessarily. Transfers, charters and guided tours have different inclusions. Read the selected package rather than relying on promotional photographs.
3. Is Wulai the same as Xiaowulai?
No. This article concerns Wulai in New Taipei, reached via Xindian and 849. Xiaowulai is a different destination in Taoyuan with different transport.
