Lake-view rooms and pier access in Shuishe and Ita Thao

The biggest booking mistake at Sun Moon Lake is assuming a hotel by the water guarantees a lake-view room. Shuishe is the practical bus gateway; Ita Thao combines a pier, small eateries and waterfront inns; hotels beyond those two centres work better for a resort-focused stay. Your choice changes the final transfer, where you eat and how easily you get back to your room.

This guide compares 10 hotels and B&Bs around Shuishe, Ita Thao and the immediate lakeshore, with specific room choices for couples, three-person trips and families. For the intercity journey, use our Taichung to Sun Moon Lake transport guide. Here the focus is what happens after you arrive.

My three starting points are Shui Sha Lian for an uncomplicated first car-free night, Hu Yue for an Ita Thao lake-view balcony, and Fleur de Chine for a family resort break. They solve different problems; there is no single best hotel for every itinerary.

Shui Sha Lian | Car-free first stayHu Yue | Lake-view balconyFleur de Chine | Family resort
Klook: compare Shui Sha Lian rooms and total prices

Shuishe, Ita Thao or a lakeside resort?

Area Best for Last-mile access Main compromise
Central Shuishe / pier One-night visits, first-time car-free travellers, early bus departures Arrive by intercity bus and walk; Shui Sha Lian is in the pier neighbourhood, while Doris is farther along a side lane A convenient address still does not promise a lake-view room
Western Shuishe / Hanbi Peninsula Two-night stays, waterfront walks, cycling and suite-based breaks Sun Moon Lake Hotel and The Lalu offer arranged Shuishe transfers; The Lalu has an uphill approach Distances on the map understate the effect of luggage and slopes
Ita Thao pier and village Local food, lake-view inns, hot-spring rooms and family stays Take a lakeside bus or boat from Shuishe, then walk within the village An additional transfer matters for late arrivals and early departures
Northern lakeshore / Wenwu Temple direction Bathing, dining and time inside a resort Fleur de Chine has a lakeside bus stop and pre-booked scheduled Shuishe transfers Less convenient for spontaneous trips to shops and piers

For two nights, staying in one base is usually easier than spending one night at each pier. You can explore the other shore by day without packing, storing luggage and waiting for a second check-in. Splitting a stay makes more sense when there is a clear reason, such as a late first night in Shuishe followed by a deliberate resort experience.

Compare 10 Sun Moon Lake hotels and B&Bs

The order follows location and travel needs, not a quality ranking. Compare rates for your actual dates and party size: lake views, meals and weekends can change the total substantially.

Property Area / type Best fit Room to compare Watch for
Shui Sha Lian Hotel Shuishe Pier / Mingsheng Street One car-free night near the pier Lake-view doubles and quads around 23m² Street-view rooms do not face the lake
Wyndham Sun Moon Lake Ita Thao / Zhongzheng Road Private bathing and family breaks 36m² twins; triples/family rooms around 60m² Views vary; transfers need reservations
Doris Home Shuishe side lane / B&B Cat lovers travelling as adults or with older teens Bubble double with tub; Bubble XL adds a balcony; Catmily four-person room has two queen beds No children under 13; not a lakefront stay
Sun Moon Lake Hotel Western Shuishe waterfront / Hotel Families combining lake views and waterfront walks Lake-view Japanese-style rooms: about 49m²; lake-view quad: two double beds plus a tatami area Outside the central bus-and-pier cluster; mountain rooms are not lake rooms
The Lalu Sun Moon Lake Hanbi Peninsula above Shuishe / Luxury resort A special-occasion suite stay Lake View Suite: 83m², floors 5–7, one queen bed; two-bedroom lake-view suite: 122m², four guests An uphill final approach; lakeside and lake-view suites differ
Fleur de Chine Hotel Northern shore near Wenwu Temple / Hot-spring resort Families planning substantial resort time Classic Lake View Family: 42m², two beds, maximum four; lake-view king: 46m², two guests Not in central Shuishe; limited scheduled shuttle runs
Ming Yue Hu Hotel Ita Thao Pier, Shuishalian Street / Lakeside inn Three-person trips and immediate pier access Lake-view triple: one single plus one double, three guests; separate high-floor doubles and quads Side-lake and high-floor rooms are distinct categories
Hu Yue Lakeview Hotel Ita Thao Pier, Yiyong Street / B&B / lake-view inn Couples and families prioritising a lake-facing balcony Panoramic lake-view double: about 33m² and balcony; lake-view quad: about 40m², two queen beds City-view rooms do not face the lake; second-floor categories are separate
LEALEA GARDEN HOTEL SUN MOON LAKE Ita Thao, Shuixiu Street waterfront / Hotel Travellers who want a timber-built waterfront hotel Deluxe Lake-view Family Room: two double beds, four guests; standard double/twin categories are not the same outlook Renovation timing needs checking; sauna closed from 28 September 2026
See Moon Homestay Ita Thao, Riyue Street / B&B Travellers valuing room space and village access Standard Double: 24m², two guests; Deluxe Quadruple: 42m², four guests; exact beds require confirmation No promised lake view; listed check-in ends at 20:00

Compare Shui Sha Lian by Shuishe Pier, Wyndham in Ita Thao and Fleur de Chine for a lakeside resort stay. Choose your base around bus arrivals, piers and hotel transfers, then check the exact room view, occupancy, breakfast and cancellation terms. A lakeside address does not guarantee a lake view from every room.

    1. Shui Sha Lian Hotel: A Shuishe-pier base with a choice of lake-view rooms

Shui Sha Lian Hotel collage: Lakefront exterior, Lake-view double room, Dining room, Reception lobby.

Shui Sha Lian Hotel is a practical first base at Sun Moon Lake if you arrive by bus and want the pier, dinner and your room in the same Shuishe neighbourhood. Its Mingsheng Street location reduces the need to move luggage across the lake. It is especially useful for a one-night visit, with a lake-view category worth considering if you will spend time in the room.

Full-lake-view doubles are about seven ping, roughly 23m², with a large double or twin beds. Full-lake-view quadruples are also about 23m², with two double beds for four; the larger quadruple is around eight ping, or 26m². Street-view doubles and quads are approximately 20m². Check both the view label and floor space rather than assuming the whole hotel faces the lake.

From the Sun Moon Lake bus stop in Shuishe, continue through the village to No. 5 Mingsheng Street. Leave luggage before joining a boat queue. The pier, bus stop and reception are separate points even within this compact area; save the entrance route for rain or bulky luggage. Drivers should confirm the parking location and charges in advance.

The appeal is the pier-side neighbourhood and the chosen view, rather than a full resort programme. Four people in roughly 23m² will still need to manage luggage carefully. Choose Fleur de Chine or Wyndham for a stay centred on bathing and hotel facilities; choose Shuishe when an early onward bus matters more.

    2. Wyndham Sun Moon Lake: Hot-spring rooms and family space in Ita Thao

Wyndham Sun Moon Lake collage: Hotel entrance, Superior room, Outdoor pool, Dining room.

Wyndham sits on Zhongzheng Road in Ita Thao, combining the village dining area with a hotel stay built around bathing and on-site meals. Compared with a compact Shuishe-pier hotel, it rewards leaving more time at the property. Choose it for the private hot-spring bath and Ita Thao location, rather than assuming every category has a frontal lake view.

Superior twins are around 36m² with two single beds for two guests. Superior triples are about 60m², with three single beds listed by the hotel, a useful configuration for three adults. The roughly 60m² family room has two double beds for four. Rooms have private hot-spring baths, but mountain, partial-lake and other view categories differ.

From Shuishe, take the 6669 round-lake bus to Ita Thao or reserve the hotel’s scheduled Shuishe transfer. A separate complimentary Taichung HSR shuttle is offered to individual hotel guests; the published outbound departure is 14:00 from first-floor Exit 6. Book by 18:00 the day before arrival and confirm capacity and eligibility. Group and sister-property conditions differ.

Two nights give you more time to use the bath, restaurants and leisure facilities. For an early return to Taichung, Ita Thao adds a transfer compared with Shuishe, and the complimentary HSR bus may not fit your train. Compare meals, full occupancy and return transport before paying more for a view upgrade.

    3. Doris Home — Cat lovers travelling as adults or with older teens

Doris Home collage: Homestay exterior, Doris Room, Freestanding bath (room type unspecified), Shared area with a cat.

Doris Home is a small B&B down a Shuishe side lane, suited to travellers who want the bus-town convenience with a more personal atmosphere. Cats are central to the experience, and the outlook is towards greenery and the hillside rather than a broad sweep of lake. It is a poor match for anyone uncomfortable around animals or expecting a full resort.

The Bubble double has a bathtub in a semi-open bathroom with a curtain for the bathing area. Bubble XL adds a balcony and is a single, individually limited room. The Catmily category accommodates four on two queen beds, but its family-room label does not override the property’s age restriction.

Doris Home does not accept children under 13 and limits groups to fewer than eight guests. Only specific rooms allow pets, with advance approval required before booking. This is not a property where bringing an animal after reserving an ordinary room is a safe assumption.

From the Shuishe bus area, continue along Zhongshan Road and turn into Lane 146 for number 20. Save the entrance directions for an evening arrival. I would choose Doris over a pier-front property for adult couples or friends who are happy to get their lake views on a walk and spend their indoor time in a cat-filled B&B.

    4. Sun Moon Lake Hotel — Families combining lake views and waterfront walks

Sun Moon Lake Hotel collage: Hotel exterior, Lake View Japanese Double Room, Bathroom of the Lake View Japanese Double Room, Restaurant.

Sun Moon Lake Hotel is on the western side of Shuishe, where waterfront walking becomes a bigger part of the stay than immediate access to the pier’s shops. It makes sense for two nights with an unhurried morning by the lake. For a late arrival followed by an early departure, however, the transfer schedule deserves attention before the room photographs.

The 映月湖景和洋房 lake-view Japanese-style category is about 49m², with either one double or two single beds plus a tatami area. The 雅緻湖景四人房 lake-view quad has two double beds and a tatami area. Do not confuse it with the larger 雅緻豪華四人房, which has one double and two singles: a more elaborate room name does not automatically mean a better lake view.

The free fixed-point shuttle serves Shuishe Visitor Center and requires a reservation at least 30 minutes ahead. It follows a timetable, rather than operating as an on-demand taxi. Match both your arrival and dinner return to the available runs. Additional tatami bedding is a paid occupancy arrangement, not an extra bedroom that can simply be used for free.

This is my family-oriented choice for room space and access to lakeside walks without moving into the top luxury bracket. Compared with Shui Sha Lian, it adds a transfer but suits a slower waterfront routine. If you expect to go back and forth to the bus terminal throughout the day, Shui Sha Lian is the easier base.

    5. The Lalu Sun Moon Lake — A special-occasion suite stay

The Lalu Sun Moon Lake collage: Hotel entrance, Lake View Suite (One-Bedroom), Treatment room with two massage beds, Outdoor pool.

The Lalu makes the most sense when the suite itself is part of the itinerary. Set on the Hanbi Peninsula, it sits above the Shuishe pier area rather than on the same level. The short-looking map distance conceals an uphill final approach, and a late check-in followed by an early departure gives little time to enjoy what you are paying for.

Distinguish Lake View from Lakeside when booking. The one-bedroom Lake View Suite is listed at 83m² on floors 5–7 with one queen bed; the equally sized Lakeside version is on floors 2–3. Their elevations and outlooks differ. For four guests, the 122m² two-bedroom Lakeview Suite is listed for four, with one king bed and one double bed. Reserve that configuration rather than assuming a two-person suite will accept the entire family.

The walk from the Shuishe bus terminus is approximately 15 minutes. Staying guests can arrange a pick-up there by requesting it when booking and contacting the service centre on arrival. That is the better solution for heavy luggage or anyone who would find the hill difficult. Pool time, spa appointments and dinner fit naturally into a resort stay, but treatments and meals need to be checked against the actual package inclusions.

I would choose The Lalu for an anniversary or a trip with a deliberately empty afternoon. A conventional quad at Fleur de Chine or Sun Moon Lake Hotel is simpler if you only need four people in one room. Here the two-bedroom suite is about more separation and time together, rather than squeezing extra occupants into a double.

    6. Fleur de Chine Hotel — Families planning substantial resort time

Fleur de Chine Hotel collage: Lakefront exterior, Classic King Room with Lake View, Bath in the Classic King Room with Lake View, Shared bathing area.

Fleur de Chine is on the northern shore towards Wenwu Temple. Choose it when bathing, meals and downtime are important parts of the visit, rather than treating the hotel as somewhere to sleep between full sightseeing days. Its setting encourages a more resort-based rhythm than Shuishe’s bus-and-pier cluster.

The Classic Lake View Family Room is 42m² on floors 5–7, with two beds and a maximum of four guests. The Classic Lake View king room is 46m² and accommodates two. Japanese-style categories use tatami bedding, which some families enjoy but which may be awkward for guests who find getting up from the floor difficult. Mountain, lake and mixed mountain-and-lake views are separate categories.

Without a car, use the lakeside bus to the Fleur de Chine stop or book the Shuishe transfer. The published 2026 complimentary shuttle has one morning and one afternoon round trip, using Shuishe Zhongxing Parking Lot as its town pick-up point. Booking by 18:00 the previous day is recommended. It is not an hourly service, and group-booking conditions differ from those for individual guests.

This is a strong option for a family wanting two settled days with room views and bathing time. Compare meal packages using your full party size before deciding whether to upgrade the outlook. If your priority is stepping outside for small local eateries and spontaneous boat trips, central Shuishe or Ita Thao is a more natural fit.

    7. Ming Yue Hu Hotel — Three-person trips and immediate pier access

Ming Yue Hu Hotel collage: Hotel exterior at night, Double Room with Lake View, Bathroom of the Double Room with Lake View, Reception lobby.

Ming Yue Hu occupies the corner between Ita Thao’s pier and shopping streets. It puts boat trips, local food and an in-room lake outlook into one compact base. The trade-off is the additional transfer after reaching Shuishe by intercity bus. Once your bags are at the inn, though, dinner and evening waterfront walks do not require another crossing.

The lake-view triple is particularly useful: it is designed for three guests, with one single and one double bed, a bathtub and a viewing balcony. Three adults can plan the sleeping arrangement in advance instead of relying on an improvised extra bed in a double. There are also four-person lake-view rooms and explicitly named high-floor categories.

A side-lake double, a regular lake-view double, a high-floor lake-view double and a VIP category should not be treated as interchangeable. If the outlook is the reason for staying, compare the precise room name and floor rather than relying on a request in the booking notes. The busy pier-side corner also suits access better than complete separation from visitor activity.

For arrival by boat, check the operator’s calling pattern and luggage rules. By bus, get off at Ita Thao on route 6669 or 6669A and walk through the shopping area to 11 Shuishalian Street. This would be my shortlist choice for an actual three-person room right by the pier.

    8. Hu Yue Lakeview Hotel — Couples and families prioritising a lake-facing balcony

Hu Yue Lakeview Hotel collage: Lake-view dining area, Lake View Double Room, Bathroom of the Lake View Double Room, Balcony listed with the Deluxe Lake View Double Room.

Hu Yue is a B&B-style lake-view inn beside Ita Thao Pier. Compare it with Ming Yue Hu if you want a balcony overlooking the water and restaurants close at hand. Its strengths are room orientation and the pier-side position, rather than a large resort’s leisure facilities. The English Hotel label should not create an expectation of a pool or extensive spa.

The panoramic lake-view double is about 33m², with one queen-size bed, a balcony and a bathtub. The panoramic lake-view quad is about 40m² with two queen beds. For more room and a corner outlook, compare the roughly 50m² Deluxe Lake View Double; it is a distinct category, not simply another label for the standard panoramic room.

Second-floor lake-view and deluxe options are listed separately, so check the floor as well as the view. The City View Double has a bathtub but faces the town and has no balcony. Even at a waterfront property, those are materially different purchases.

From the Ita Thao bus stop, walk into Yiyong Street; from the pier, the inn is reached through the immediate waterfront shopping area. Drivers should use the designated off-site parking arrangement. On holidays, the inn directs guests straight to its car park, with limited spaces and one car per room. I would pay for Hu Yue when a lake-facing balcony matters, while considering See Moon if the view is not a priority.

    9. LEALEA GARDEN HOTEL SUN MOON LAKE — Travellers who want a timber-built waterfront hotel

LEALEA GARDEN HOTEL SUN MOON LAKE collage: Lakefront exterior, Deluxe Lake-view Double Room, Bathroom of the Deluxe Lake-view Double Room, Lake-view dining area.

The former Richforest Hotel has been renamed 力麗日月潭哲園會館, and its current Trip listing reads LEALEA GARDEN HOTEL SUN MOON LAKE. This is the timber-built waterfront property at 31 Shuixiu Street, not the group’s separate Sun or Moon buildings. Match the address as well as the brand when comparing offers.

Look at the Deluxe Lake-view Double if you want the timber interiors and water outlook together. The Deluxe Lake-view Family Room has two double beds and a four-person occupancy. Standard double or twin categories have a different outlook, while the Penthouse Family Suite has a split-level layout. Internal stairs deserve consideration for small children or older relatives before you opt for the extra height.

Two current operating notes matter. The renovation originally planned for July 2026 has been deferred, with normal operation expected until mid-February 2027 and the definitive schedule still to be announced. Separately, the sauna closed on 28 September 2026, with reopening to be confirmed. Do not count a proposed café or renovated room design as an existing facility when booking a future stay.

Walk towards Shuixiu Street along the Ita Thao waterfront from the pier, or approach on foot from Ita Thao’s bus stop. The reason to choose this property is its wooden architecture in a lakeside setting. If newly renovated interiors or sauna access is essential, choose another option for now and revisit this hotel after its plans are settled.

    10. See Moon Homestay — Travellers valuing room space and village access

See Moon Homestay collage: Reception area, Standard Double Room, Bathroom of the Standard Double Room, Dining area.

See Moon is a B&B on Riyue Street in Ita Thao, aimed at travellers who value room space and village convenience more than a lake-facing balcony. You can return from the waterfront and find dinner in the surrounding streets, without building the evening around a resort restaurant.

The Standard Double is listed at 24m² for two guests. Deluxe and Superior doubles are 34m² for two, while the Deluxe Quadruple is 42m² and explicitly accommodates four. That gives a family or group a genuine four-person option. Confirm the exact bedding on the selected offer, particularly for adult groups, rather than counting sleeping places from a photograph.

A lake view is not promised across these room categories. Plan to enjoy the water from the pier and lakeside paths instead. The listing gives check-in as 15:00–20:00, so this is not a stay to approach as though a large-hotel reception will automatically be available all night. If your bus reaches Shuishe late, arrange the onward road journey and contact the property before travelling.

From the Ita Thao arrival area, walk through the village to 83 Riyue Street; parking is off site and should be approached using the host’s directions. I would choose See Moon for a practical village stay, then spend more on Hu Yue or Ming Yue Hu only if a private lake-view balcony is central to the trip.

Staying without a car: plan the return to your hotel first

Shuishe’s bus arrival area and its pier are different places

The Sun Moon Lake bus station and Shuishe Visitor Center area form the main land-transport interchange. Shuishe Pier is where you board a boat. Drop luggage at your accommodation before joining a boat queue if possible. For a hotel transfer, save the actual meeting point: Fleur de Chine’s Shuishe pick-up uses Zhongxing Parking Lot, not the pier.

Use the lakeside bus for hotel access and check boat-ticket rules

Route 6669 links Shuishe with Fleur de Chine, Wenwu Temple, the ropeway and Ita Thao, with some journeys continuing to Xuanzang and Xuanguang temples. Route 6669A turns back at Ita Thao. Check the destination board, your return stop and the Nantou Bus timetable. This is a scheduled rural service, so leave more margin than you would for a frequent city metro.

Boats primarily connect Shuishe, Xuanguang Temple and Ita Thao. Their calling order and operator affect the journey. The round-lake boat ticket sold by Nantou Bus allows one boarding at each pier for a single circuit; it is not an unlimited shuttle pass. If you plan to use a boat for check-in on one day and to return on the next, check validity and whether another sector ticket is needed.

Late arrivals and early departures need a road option

Do not make a late arrival depend entirely on a boat. Sailings are affected by operating hours, weather and lake conditions. For Ita Thao, check whether a connecting bus still runs or arrange a taxi with the property and agree the cost in advance. For an onward high-speed train, work backwards from your bus out of Shuishe and include the first transfer from your hotel.

Five checks before booking a lake view or family room

    1. Read the complete view category. Lake, side-lake, mixed mountain-and-lake and city views are different products; balconies are not automatic.
    2. Enter every guest. A room that holds four may initially be priced for two, with additional breakfast and occupancy charges.
    3. Separate quads, two-bedroom suites and split-level rooms. Two beds do not mean two bedrooms, and internal stairs can change suitability.
    4. Confirm shuttle timing, pick-up point and eligibility. Free does not mean on demand or included with every booking arrangement.
    5. Check the facilities that determine your choice. A bathtub is not automatically a hot-spring bath, and a closed sauna or planned renovation can outweigh a tempting rate.

    Sun Moon Lake accommodation FAQs

Is Shuishe or Ita Thao better for a first car-free stay?

Choose Shuishe for one night or an early onward bus: it avoids an extra transfer with luggage. Ita Thao works well for two nights centred on village food and waterfront inns, provided you arrange the connection from Shuishe in advance.

Does a lakeside hotel guarantee a lake view?

No. Shui Sha Lian has street-view rooms, Hu Yue has city-view rooms and Fleur de Chine has mountain-view categories. The view, floor and balcony need to appear in the booked room description; a hotel’s main photograph is not a room guarantee.

Can two adults and two children book any twin room?

Only if the occupancy rules and rate cover all four. Wyndham’s Superior Family category accommodates four, and Shui Sha Lian has explicitly designated four-person lake-view and street-view rooms. A double room cannot be assumed to fit extra children simply because they could share a bed. Enter the full party and children’s ages before comparing rates and breakfast inclusions.

Which room is straightforward for three adults?

Ming Yue Hu’s lake-view triple has one single and one double bed for three guests. If all three adults want a separate bed, compare Wyndham’s Superior Triple with the three-single-bed configuration and confirm the exact arrangement on your chosen rate.

Which stays should I compare for an in-room hot-spring bath?

Start with the relevant categories at Fleur de Chine and Wyndham. A tub at another property does not establish that the water is a natural hot spring. Treat Doris Home’s Bubble rooms and Hu Yue’s tub rooms as bathing choices rather than assuming an onsen-style experience.

Can I commute between Shuishe and Ita Thao on one boat pass?

Not indefinitely on the standard round-lake ticket sold by Nantou Bus. It permits a single circuit with one boarding at each pier. Repeated crossings require checking the operator’s ticket products or using the lakeside bus instead.

Should I change hotels between the two piers on a two-night visit?

Usually not. One base leaves more time for exploring and avoids packing and check-in logistics. Split the stay when a second property is a deliberate experience, such as adding a night in a suite at The Lalu.

Is Doris Home suitable for young children and pets?

It does not accept children under 13. Pets are allowed only in particular rooms with approval before booking. The four-person Catmily name does not override the age policy or make every room pet-friendly.

Is LEALEA GARDEN HOTEL SUN MOON LAKE the former Richforest?

Yes: the property at 31 Shuixiu Street, has been renamed. It is separate from the group’s Sun and Moon hotels. Its sauna is temporarily closed, and the postponed renovation schedule should be checked for later stays.

On a limited budget, should I pay for a lake view or stay longer?

If you will be out most of the day, a conveniently located non-lake-view room can make an extra night more valuable. If the point of the trip is an anniversary or a slow morning on a private balcony, reserve the right lake-view category and leave enough time to enjoy it.

The final choice: put your main priority first

For a first car-free night, start with Shui Sha Lian in Shuishe. For an Ita Thao lake-facing balcony, compare the exact categories at Hu Yue and Ming Yue Hu. For bathing and family resort time, weigh Wyndham against Fleur de Chine. Save The Lalu for a trip where the suite is part of the experience. The right stay is the room you actually book, the route to its door and the time you will have to enjoy it.
