Chiayi HSR and Chiayi railway station are two separate places

Traveling from Chiayi HSR Station to Chiayi TRA railway station in 2026? The two stations are separate locations, not a short station-to-station walk. Chiayi HSR is in Taibao, outside central Chiayi, while the Taiwan Railways station is in the city. The most useful public transport option is the BRT bus from HSR Exit 2 to Chiayi City Bus Station, beside the rear of Chiayi TRA station.

Routes 7211 and 7212 both serve this connection. The scheduled HSR-to-city-bus-station journey on route 7212 takes about 30 minutes, but that is only the bus ride—not the complete transfer. Allow additional time to leave HSR, wait for the bus and reach your onward railway platform, forest-railway facilities or front-side hotel. A taxi may be more convenient for luggage or a specific destination.

BRT bus 7211 / 7212 Chiayi City Bus Station, beside the rear of Chiayi TRA station Free for eligible HSR transfers. Otherwise, operator fare tables list NT$48 cash adult, NT$42 adult card fare or NT$24 eligible cash half fare. Route 7212’s scheduled HSR-to-city segment is about 30 minutes, excluding waiting and walking. Flexible connections, manageable luggage and travelers who can allow time between services

Boarding BRT at Chiayi HSR Station

Use these four steps to reach Chiayi TRA station by bus:

    1. Leave HSR and find Exit 2. Follow the BRT/transfer-bus signs to the stop beside Exit 2. Keep your same-day HSR ticket or journey proof accessible.
    2. Choose the city-bound direction. Look for route 7211 or 7212 serving Chiayi City Bus Station (嘉義市轉運中心). Do not board a bus heading toward Puzi or the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum.
    3. Check the HSR stop time. On route 7211, times starting at Puzi are not departures from HSR. On route 7212, use the separate Chiayi HSR column rather than the departure time from the National Palace Museum.
    4. Get off at Chiayi City Bus Station. The operator identifies this stop on Zhongxing Road, beside the TRA rear station. Follow the signs for your next railway connection or the designated route toward the front station.

Route 7211 travels between Puzi, HSR and Chiayi Park; route 7212 serves the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, HSR and Hung Jen School. Both call at the city bus station. Route 7212A is not a general daytime alternative from HSR: its special 05:30 service runs from Chiayi Park toward HSR.

For boarding assistance, check with the operator ahead. THSR’s lift-installation notice covers 14 August 2026 to 30 June 2027, affecting parts of the first-floor lobby and second-floor lift waiting-area passages at Chiayi HSR Station. This does not mean every lift is closed; follow temporary signs for the available lifts, exits and accessible passages.

Chiayi HSR to TRA: sample BRT departure times

The following are selected services from the operator’s route 7212 timetable, edition 1 September 2026. They show the actual boarding stop and direction, not the route’s original terminal departure. They are examples only, not the full timetable or live arrival predictions.

Direction Board at Departure Get off at Scheduled arrival
HSR → TRA rear station Chiayi HSR Station 09:00 Chiayi City Bus Station 09:30
HSR → TRA rear station Chiayi HSR Station 10:00 Chiayi City Bus Station 10:30
TRA rear station → HSR Chiayi City Bus Station 08:00 Chiayi HSR Station 08:30
TRA rear station → HSR Chiayi City Bus Station 09:00 Chiayi HSR Station 09:30

These times apply specifically to the selected 7212 services. Check both 7211 and 7212 for other departures, especially early or late in the day; the first and last entries on a 7212 timetable do not establish the first or last BRT service overall. The complete 7212 timetable and operator route information are linked below.

Do not confuse the roughly 30-minute scheduled HSR-to-Chiayi City Bus Station segment with the longer route toward Chiayi Park. Nor should a 09:30 bus-station arrival be treated as arrival at a TRA or forest-railway platform.

Who gets the free HSR transfer?

The free BRT transfer rules apply to qualifying HSR passengers boarding or alighting at Chiayi HSR Station. The bus operator may check same-day journey proof for the same HSR station. Keep your Chiayi HSR ticket or electronic travel proof available, including for a reverse transfer to an HSR departure. Tell the driver you are transferring and follow the required validation instructions.

Passengers using combined electronic-ticket, EasyCard, iPASS or credit-card arrangements must follow the applicable verification and payment procedure. Do not assume every payment method qualifies automatically, or that everyone should tap—or avoid tapping—the same reader. Travel between unrelated intermediate stops is not automatically free.

Without the HSR concession, the operator’s fare charts for the HSR–Chiayi City Bus Station segment list NT$48 cash adult, NT$42 adult electronic-card fare and NT$24 eligible cash half fare. Half fares require the relevant eligibility, and the card fare depends on a supported ticket and payment method; it is not a promise that every credit card or mobile payment receives the same fare.

For a taxi, specify 台鐵嘉義站前站 for the TRA front station or 台鐵嘉義站後站 for the rear, rather than saying only “Chiayi Station.” Confirm the lawful charging basis and that the vehicle accommodates your luggage.

At the rear station: choose your next step

For Taiwan Railways: Follow the signs from Chiayi City Bus Station to the TRA station entrance, check the train’s platform on the live departure board and allow time for ticket procedures, walking and level changes. The bus stop is not the railway platform.

For Zhongshan Road or a front-side hotel: Use the designated cross-station pedestrian route and the Chiayi TRA station plan to locate the correct exit. The city bus station is on the rear side, while many central-city destinations are reached from the front. Do not assume you can walk freely through railway fare gates, and follow local signs if pedestrian routes change. For a longer city stay, our Chiayi transportation guide covers onward city travel.

For the Alishan Forest Railway: Confirm the booked departure station, ticket collection and check-in requirements for your specific service. Find the designated forest-railway ticketing and boarding facilities rather than assuming the BRT arrival stop is the departure point. A reserved forest train requires more planning than an ordinary flexible city transfer.

If your actual destination is Alishan and you have not booked a forest-railway service, you may not need to travel to Chiayi TRA station at all. Compare the 7329 bus from HSR with city departures in our Chiayi–Alishan transport guide.

Build a connection from four separate pieces

A realistic transfer includes (1) exiting HSR and locating Exit 2, (2) waiting for the correct BRT, (3) the scheduled bus journey and (4) walking from the TRA rear-side bus station to your actual boarding point. Add any ticket collection, check-in or boarding deadline required by your onward train.

For example, the published 7212 service departing HSR at 09:00 reaches Chiayi City Bus Station at 09:30. That does not guarantee a connection with a 10:00 Alishan Forest Railway departure: you still need to reach the correct facilities and satisfy any reservation or boarding requirements, with possible traffic delays. Check whether an earlier usable 7211 or 7212 service, or an earlier HSR arrival, provides a more comfortable margin.

Work backward from the reserved train’s departure and required check-in time, not merely from the scheduled BRT arrival. If the forest train is essential and the same-morning transfer remains fragile, consider staying in Chiayi the previous night. Our Chiayi hotel guide can help you weigh front- and rear-station access and luggage handling.

A taxi may reduce some waiting and walking, but traffic still applies. It is not a guaranteed solution to a late HSR arrival or a missed bus.

Bags, hotels and the return to HSR

If your hotel is on the front side, include the cross-station route and luggage handling when comparing BRT with a direct taxi. If you are only changing to a TRA train, there may be no reason to detour to the front-station street.

For the return journey, board at the appropriate Chiayi City Bus Station bay on the rear side and confirm that your 7211 or 7212 service is heading toward Chiayi HSR. Do not board an unrelated front-side bus simply because its destination contains “Chiayi.” Keep your same-day HSR booking proof ready for the transfer concession.

Reverse-direction 7212 examples include 08:00 → 08:30 and 09:00 → 09:30 from Chiayi City Bus Station to HSR, but these are not a complete service list. Check both routes for your actual travel date and the later departures, especially before deciding which is the day’s last usable bus. Allow time to enter the HSR station and reach your departure platform after the bus arrives.

Check the operator’s notices and live information before traveling, especially during holidays, heavy rain or city events. If the wait no longer leaves a sensible margin for your HSR departure, adjust the plan before relying on the final available service.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I ride the BRT free without taking high-speed rail?

Not under the HSR transfer offer. Qualifying travelers need the relevant same-day Chiayi HSR journey proof and must follow the driver’s validation procedure. Otherwise, the published HSR–city bus-station fares include NT$48 cash adult, NT$42 qualifying adult card fare and NT$24 eligible cash half fare.

Are Chiayi HSR and Chiayi TRA at the same station?

No. Chiayi HSR is outside central Chiayi and requires a road transfer to the city railway station. Routes 7211 and 7212 connect HSR with Chiayi City Bus Station at the rear of the TRA station; they do not bring you directly to the train platform.

Which exit and BRT direction should I use at Chiayi HSR?

Follow the BRT signs toward Exit 2 and choose a city-bound 7211 or 7212 calling at Chiayi City Bus Station. Check the actual HSR departure column, since the original terminal time shown on the timetable may be earlier. Buses heading toward Puzi or the National Palace Museum are not the correct direction.

Does the transfer take only 30 minutes?

Approximately 30 minutes is the scheduled bus segment on the cited 7212 services between HSR and Chiayi City Bus Station. The full transfer also includes exiting HSR, waiting for a suitable departure, walking to the onward platform and completing any ticket procedures. Do not use 30 minutes as a guaranteed door-to-door connection.

Must I transfer to central Chiayi to reach Alishan?

No. The Alishan Forest Railway and city-origin 7322 buses use city boarding points, while the 7329 Alishan bus departs from HSR. Choose your onward Alishan service first and confirm its departure point and ticket requirements before deciding whether to transfer to Chiayi TRA.

Is the rear-station bus stop convenient for a front-side hotel?

It serves the rear station, not the front-side hotel streets directly. Include the designated cross-station walk, possible route changes and luggage handling. A taxi directly to the hotel’s address may be easier if that walk is inconvenient.

Where do I board the return BRT, and what is the last service?

Use the HSR-bound bay at Chiayi City Bus Station beside the TRA rear station. Check both the 7211 and 7212 timetables for your date; the last departure printed for 7212 alone is not necessarily the last BRT connection. Build in time after arriving at HSR to reach your train.
