Taipei to Tamsui: the MRT gets you to the old town, not Fisherman’s Wharf
For Tamsui Old Street and the nearby riverfront, take the Red Line to Tamsui, its northern terminus. Fisherman’s Wharf requires another leg. Tamsui MRT station, the old-town ferry piers and Fisherman’s Wharf are distinct places, even when an itinerary casually describes all of them as “Tamsui.”
This 2026 guide starts with the order of your day. Choose whether you want the old town first or the wharf first, then select the connection. With a short afternoon, one waterfront area and one extension is usually easier to manage than trying to include the old town, Bali and the wharf.
Four plans with different arrival points
| Plan | Route from Taipei | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Old Street and Golden Riverside | Red Line to Tamsui, then walk | No light-rail transfer needed |
| Fisherman’s Wharf first | Red Line to Hongshulin, then the wharf-bound light rail | Kanding is a different light-rail destination |
| Old town followed by the wharf | Tamsui, then Red 26 or a confirmed ferry sailing | A Bali ferry is not a wharf ferry |
| Bali Left Bank | Walk from Tamsui to the ferry pier and take the Bali route | Bali is across the river, not the same place as Fisherman’s Wharf |
Boarding the right Red Line train
At Taipei Main Station, follow Red Line signs and choose a train toward Tamsui. If you use a train terminating at Beitou, continue on a Tamsui-bound service there; do not take the Xinbeitou branch. For the old town, stay on until Tamsui R28. For the light rail, change one stop earlier at Hongshulin R27.
You do not need to start at Taipei Main Station if another MRT station is closer to your accommodation. Join the Red Line at a convenient interchange. On the way back, use the southbound line and change according to your hotel’s location.
Adult fares and useful journey times
| Journey | Adult fare | Journey time |
|---|---|---|
| Taipei Main–Tamsui | NT$50 | 37 minutes |
| Zhongshan–Tamsui | NT$50 | 36 minutes |
| Ximen–Tamsui | NT$50 | 41 minutes |
| Shilin–Tamsui | NT$40 | 26 minutes |
The operator’s Tamsui fare table includes train travel and interchange walking but not waiting. Add the approach to your starting station and the walk at the other end. An ordinary Taipei Main return is NT$100; light rail, buses and ferries use their own ticketing arrangements.
A day pass is worth comparing only against the journeys you actually intend to make. A relatively long MRT ride does not automatically make a pass better value. Check concessions separately rather than assuming a local resident or card-specific discount applies to overseas visitors.
From the station to Old Street
The Old Street guide identifies the Zhongzheng Road area and its adjoining streets, with Golden Riverside on the water side. Use the MRT station map and Old Street signs to orient yourself. Choose the shopping streets for food and shops, or the riverside for a more open walking route.
Keep the pace realistic if you are moving with children, a stroller or someone who needs frequent rests. A busy shopping street is slower than a map estimate. The street itself being accessible at night does not mean all food stalls and shops share the same opening hours.
Red 26 or the light rail for Fisherman’s Wharf?
| Where you are | Connection to the wharf | Adult fare and time |
|---|---|---|
| Finishing in Tamsui Old Street | Red 26 from MRT Tamsui toward the wharf | NT$15; about 10–15-minute off-peak intervals; ride varies with traffic |
| Coming directly from Taipei | Change at Hongshulin for the V26-bound light rail | NT$30 and 28 minutes running time; waiting and walking extra |
The current Red 26 route page lists approximately 4–7-minute peak and 10–15-minute off-peak intervals. Services before 08:00 and after 22:00 have arrangements that start at Danhai and skip the wharf. Confirm the stop pattern for a late evening visit rather than assuming the full route operates until the last bus.
At Hongshulin V01, choose a train marked Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf V26, rather than Kanding. The light-rail fare chart gives NT$30 and its running-time chart gives 28 minutes, excluding waiting. Allow roughly 5–10 minutes to walk into the harbor area; a restaurant or the bridge may be farther than the nearest entrance.
Red 26 is the natural extension after Old Street. The light rail is more useful when the wharf is your first stop from Taipei. You can return by a different route without retracing the whole journey.
Ferries: ask for the destination in full
The regional transport guide distinguishes Tamsui, Bali and Fisherman’s Wharf boarding locations. At the ticket desk, name the destination you want and check the correct queue, ticket direction and last return. A ticket for crossing to Bali is not a substitute for a ticket to the wharf.
Confirm the day’s sailing arrangements and retain a land-based backup. Wind, weather or operating changes can affect boats, and a return ticket does not guarantee a departure whenever you wish. If you are already on the Bali side, investigate Bali’s road connections; the wharf’s light-rail station is on the other side of the river.
Sunset plans and the journey home
Use the Fisherman’s Wharf location page when deciding where to meet. A restaurant, Lovers’ Bridge and the light-rail stop are not interchangeable pickup points. Give your group a specific landmark and finish the transport leg early enough to avoid rushing for the view.
For special events, use notices matching your travel date. A fireworks shuttle advertised for a past evening is not a year-round service. Check each link in the return chain separately: ferry or bus, light rail if used, and the MRT connection. A late-running MRT is no help if your first leg has already finished.
Consider exposure to sun, wind and rain along the waterfront, especially with children or less-mobile companions. Leave substantial luggage at your hotel and keep your bags manageable for the connections home.
A few practical questions
Does the Xinbeitou branch go there?
No. Remain on the main line toward Tamsui.
Can I take any light-rail train from Hongshulin?
For the wharf, select a train specifically marked Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf.
Is the Bali ferry the same route?
No. Check the destination before buying and boarding.
Does every Red 26 bus enter the wharf?
Do not assume so; verify your departure, particularly late in the evening.
Plan your Taipei base
For an afternoon in Tamsui, a Red Line base keeps the morning flexible. Use our Taipei accommodation-area guide when choosing where to stay, then compare the Taipei Metro day-pass options against the NT$100 Taipei Main return plus your morning rides.
