For a simple day trip from Taipei Main Station or Banqiao, check a TRA train to Yingge first. The Sanying MRT is another useful option, particularly if you are already on the Bannan Line or want to combine Yingge with Sanxia. The best choice depends on your first destination: the ceramics shopping streets, Yingge Ceramics Museum and New Taipei City Art Museum do not share one interchangeable arrival point.

The Sanying Line opened on June 30, 2026, and paid operation began on September 1, 2026. Advice that treats Yingge as accessible only by train, or promises free trial-period MRT rides, is out of date. This guide covers travel from Taipei city, rather than an airport transfer.

Choose your destination before choosing your train

First stop Arrival options What changes the decision
Yingge Old Street TRA Yingge or Sanying LB09 Ceramics Old Street TRA avoids the Dingpu transfer from Taipei Main; the MRT approach to the old street includes a slope
Yingge Ceramics Museum TRA Yingge The museum describes a walk from the Wenhua Road exit
New Taipei City Art Museum Sanying LB08 Yingge Station or TRA Yingge Use the museum connection rather than getting off at Ceramics Old Street
Yingge and Sanxia together TRA plus the Sanying Line Arrive and leave by different routes to avoid unnecessary backtracking

Taking TRA from Taipei Main or Banqiao

Follow the TRA signs at Taipei Main Station, not the high-speed rail or Airport MRT signs. Search from Taipei to Yingge for your travel date and choose a service that actually calls at Yingge. A southbound destination displayed on a train is not enough to establish that it stops there. If you are staying in Banqiao, search from Banqiao rather than going back into central Taipei first.

Local and Fast Local services are sensible starting points for comparison. Use the official TRA station and journey information for the selected service’s running time and fare. Compare the whole trip, including getting from your hotel to the platform, waiting and walking at the far end. A train’s published journey time is not a door-to-door estimate.

At Yingge, choose the exit for your first stop. The ceramics museum’s approach is via Wenhua Road; follow the old-street signs if you are heading for the shops. To change to the MRT, follow the connection to LB08 Yingge Station. TRA and the Sanying Line are separate systems, so allow time to move between them rather than expecting a same-platform interchange.

    Taking the MRT via Dingpu

Use the Bannan Line toward Dingpu and check the destination displayed on your train. At Dingpu, follow signs to the Sanying Line and board toward Yingtao Fude. Choose LB09 Ceramics Old Street for the pottery-shopping district, or LB08 Yingge Station for the TRA connection and art-museum area. Keeping the station code in your saved notes helps avoid mixing these two stops up.

The MRT makes a combined Sanxia–Yingge day much easier to organize. It does not automatically beat a direct TRA train from Taipei Main. If your only destination is Yingge and a suitable train is about to depart, the additional journey to Dingpu and interchange may bring no practical advantage. Conversely, an MRT-based day may suit a hotel already close to the Bannan Line.

Fares and the NT$60 Sanying day pass

Sanying single fares range from NT$20 to NT$35. Its NT$60 day pass is valid on that line during operating hours on the purchase date. Budget separately for getting to Dingpu on the Bannan Line and for any TRA travel. A pass with “Sanying” in its name should not be treated as an all-Taipei transport ticket.

Add up the actual Sanying journeys you plan to make. Two NT$20 rides cost NT$40, so the pass would cost more. Three NT$20 rides total NT$60 and merely break even. Two NT$35 rides total NT$70, making a NT$60 pass NT$10 cheaper. These are arithmetic examples, not a fare quotation for a specific pair of stations. Check your own stops before buying.

    A practical day-trip sequence

For Yingge alone, organize the day around any fixed museum visit or pottery class. A workable approach is to arrive by TRA, visit the ceramics museum if it is open, continue to the shopping streets and leave from whichever station fits your final stop. A booked class should determine the timetable; browsing can remain flexible.

For two towns, you could arrive in Yingge by TRA, use the Sanying Line to Taipei University station for Sanxia, and return to Taipei via Dingpu. Reverse the order if that better matches reservations. Treat two old streets, two museums and a lengthy craft session as competing uses of your day. Cutting one destination is often more enjoyable than reducing every stop to a rushed look.

Strollers, fragile purchases and bad weather

Step-free station access does not mean that the entire old-street walk is flat. The approach from Ceramics Old Street station includes a slope. Check elevator routes and consider how much walking your group can manage before adding another destination. The official Sanying route map and introduction is useful for understanding the station choices; it is not a guarantee of a particular accessible walking route.

Buy bulky or fragile ceramics near the end of the day and ask for secure packing. Keep packages stable and out of other passengers’ way. Leave a large suitcase at your accommodation where possible; do not assume a station locker will exist in the required size or be available. In poor weather, prioritize indoor activities and check transport and venue notices before leaving.

When an organized transfer is worth comparing

If you want Sanxia and Yingge combined without arranging each connection yourself, there is a Ximen-departure shuttle-tour product. It is a scheduled activity with a meeting point, not a public-transport ticket. Check available dates and the selected package’s craft activities before paying. For Yingge alone, independently arranged rail travel may be the simpler choice.

    Frequently asked questions

Is TRA the only way to Yingge?

No. TRA remains convenient from Taipei Main or Banqiao, while the Sanying MRT connects with the Bannan Line at Dingpu. Choose according to your starting point and whether Sanxia is part of the day.

Are Yingge Station and Ceramics Old Street the same stop?

No. Sanying LB08 Yingge Station connects with TRA. LB09 Ceramics Old Street is a different MRT stop. Save the code as well as the English name.

Which stop should I use for the ceramics museum?

TRA Yingge is a useful arrival point, with the museum reached on foot via Wenhua Road. Do not mistake the similarly named Ceramics Old Street station for the museum entrance.

Is the Sanying MRT still free?

Regular paid service began on September 1, 2026. Earlier trial-period free-travel advice no longer applies; any later promotional event needs its own current announcement.

Does the Sanying pass include the Taipei MRT?

Its stated scope is the Sanying Line. Include the Bannan Line approach and any TRA journeys separately when working out your total cost.

Can families visit Sanxia and Yingge in one day?

Yes, but choose one main activity in each town. A pottery booking, naps and stroller handling can consume more of the day than the rail connection itself.

Is the walk from the MRT completely level?

No. The official tourism description mentions a slope from Ceramics Old Street station. Check the precise elevator and walking route if step-free access is essential.

What if I buy too much pottery to carry?

Shop toward the end, use protective packaging and consider asking the shop about delivery. A bag of fragile items should not make it unsafe to use escalators or crowded trains.

How should I plan an evening return?

Check the final suitable departure and any connecting Taipei MRT service. Venue opening times and train operating times are different; a late train does not mean the shops remain open.

Do I need to change hotels for a Yingge visit?

Usually a Taipei-based day trip is practical. Choose transport around your existing hotel unless a multi-day workshop or another local commitment gives you a reason to stay nearby.
